iPhone4idiots App Review – RedLaser

Redlaser
RedLaser, Occipital $1.99, is only a month old, but has gotten great ratings leading to over $1,000,000 in sales for the two developers already. Use the app for five minutes and you’ll see why. The app is very accurate, quick and simple to use. After scanning a barcode, RedLaser uses Google product search to find online prices. It also keeps a list of your scanned items where you can mark your favorites or email a copy. The app also contains manual entry of UPC barcodes in case you can’t scan the barcode. This would most certainly be due to box damage as the app is impressively quick and accurate as you can see in the one minute video at the end of the post. Continue Reading…

Biz Cards – Another Crappy App :(

Biz Cards
Biz Cards sounds fine, but I don’t see the point. I’m not a big fan of this app, but frankly, I haven’t liked a lot of apps I’ve tried recently (Background Check App, for one, is horrible). Anyway, Biz Cards $3.99 by Senstic, works kind of, but doesn’t really save you time. They market it as a “Business Card Holder/Scanner/Printer” well I didn’t even try the printer because the scan quality was poor. The App Store states, “It will even “scan” your card and extract the text for indexing and contact creation”. Sounds cool, but this feature most definitely does not work. At least not on my iPhone 3G. Continue Reading…

Slango – Build Your Street Cred!

Slango
Slango, SchroederDev LLC $0.99, the urban dictionary app for the iPhone is sure to make you smile. For example, December 20th’s word was the timely pornament. Yes, as it sounds it is a pornographic Christmas ornament. Did you see one or two over the weekend? Slango has access to 4,000,000 words many of which you’ll have never heard. Of course being slang, you won’t find most of these words in Webster’s dictionary but that’s the point. I like to think of it as a pop culture dictionary or what teenagers are saying guide book. The app has a share button that allows you to easily share any word you want on Facebook, Twitter or email. Continue Reading…

BlueAnt Q1 – Voice controlled hands free calling :)

BlueAnt Q1
I’ve never used Bluetooth for anything other than a mouse. But given a number of states have passed laws about hands free driving I decided to take the plunge with a Bluetooth headset. Even Tennessee, where almost everything is legal, might one day pass this law so why not be an early adopter. Frankly, texting or surfing while you drive is more dangerous, but the laws are always way behind the times. Anyway, I jumped on Ebay and purchased a BlueAnt Q1 “like new” for $50. The MSRP sticker on the back says $129.99 which I just can’t see spending. However, overall I’m quite pleased with the purchase as this headset is really sweet. Be sure to check out my video review at the end of the post that shows how simple it is to use with your iPhone. Continue Reading…

Like Pictionary? Charadium is 4 You!

Charadium
On5 just released, Charadium, which is basically Pictionary for your iPhone/iTouch. It is multi-player only as you draw and guess with people all over the world using the Plus+ social play network. If you’ve never used Plus+ don’t worry neither had I. Just launch the app and join. It takes about a minute to type in username and email and then you are playing. Best of all – the app is FREE TODAY and will only be $0.99 after that. I’ve played for about an hour and its really well done and very fun! Continue Reading…

iPhone Storybook – Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood
ManualiPc just released another fairy tale storybook for the iPhone. They were nice enough to give me a promo code so I eagerly checked it out. Little Red Riding Hood, $0.99, is very similar to The Boy Who Cried Wolf which I reviewed a few weeks ago. The illustrations which according to the app store were made by a “contemporary cartoonist” are nice and caught the eye of both my 3 and 5 year olds. On the downside, I wouldn’t mind a few more pictures as there are only six. Nonetheless, overall this is one of the better storybooks I’ve found for the iPhone as it has an interactive drag feature for the illustrations that I haven’t seen in other apps. Continue Reading…

Faster iPhone Surfing! Tips for Safari

Happy Holidays everyone. Be sure to check back next week as we have a lot of holiday movies coming for next Monday! Also more app reviews and a review of a headset accessory I’m presently using. In another one of our hopefully helpful posts/videos for idiots we take a look at Safari, your iPhone’s browser. Part of using Safari to its fullest and fastest is using the hidden keyboard features we discussed here. If any of the following tips don’t make sense just watch the two minute video that follows. Dragon Dictation – Best FREE app of 2009???

Dragon
I hope the title caught your eye. I think a lot of you might really like this app. Oh, by the way – its FREE! I’ve never used voice recognition software much but Dragon is a big name in that space. Well, yesterday they released a free app for the iPhone. I’ve used it half a dozen times today and I’m impressed. My favorite feature is how easy it is to stop typing and start talking for updates to Facebook, Twitter or sending email. First, the simplicity of the app is perfect. Continue Reading…

Home Button Double Tap – You do use it??

HomeButton
As a quick follow-up to my hidden iPhone keyboard features post, I figured some of you don’t know about the double tap of the home button. By default, double-clicking the Home button brings you to the Home screen which is no different than just clicking the Home Button once. However, goto Settings – General – Home and you’ll see the screen pictured here on the left. You can have the Home button double tap launch your search, favorites, camera or iPod. I like to have the camera so when my kids are doing something cute I can get the camera up as quickly as possible. Continue Reading…

iPhone Keyboard – Do You Know its Hidden Features?

keyboard
So I guess many of you don’t know some of the hidden features of the iPhone keyboard. Being an idiot, I didn’t for a long time as well. Goto Settings – General – Keyboard and you’ll see the screen here on the left. Starting at the bottom see the “.” Shortcut toggle (BTW, toggle just means on/off switch)? Did you know that if you hit the space two times that it leaves a period and the one space to start your next sentence? This is a very nice feature! Above that is Enable Caps Lock. It is very annoying always having to hit the shift key to type something like TITANS! Well, with this toggle on all you have to do to enable Caps Lock is tap the Shift key twice. Continue Reading…
