Apple iPad – My Thoughts

I pretty much keep this an iPhone and iTouch only site, but today’s news about the Apple iPad has to be discussed. The iPad looks like an iPhone with one button on the front and is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and has a 9.7-inch touch screen (compared to 3.5 inch for iPhone and 6 inch for Amazon Kindle) with a 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch. This is an aspect ratio of 4:3 which isn’t great for watching movies and TV. Hopefully, Apple changes this to 16:9 or 16:10 in the next generation. To me this is the biggest flaw in the device. It comes in three models: 16 GB for $499, 32 for $599 and 64 GB for $699. All models have WiFi and Bluetooth and you can get one with 3G with an ATT contract for unlimited data for $29.99 per month.

iPhone4idiots App Review – Logo Creator

Logo Creator
Logo Creator, Laughingbird Software $1.99, gives you a simple way to create a logo for your company or blog right on your iPhone or iPod Touch. When you launch the app you are taken to the screen seen here on the left. When you tap “Create Logo” you are taken to a blank canvas where you can add objects and text. The app features over 30 templates that you can drag your elements to. Objects are scaleable by pinching as well.  It is simple to move objects or text around on the canvas or to move items to the back or foreground. Once finished you save the logo to your iPhone photos library where you can email it or use it for wallpaper. Continue Reading…

Jailbreaking Update – Redsn0w is out!

iPhone in South Africa
For anyone considering jailbreaking I thought I’d give a little update as a few things have changed over the past couple of months. First, to review there are basically two main jailbreaks/unlocks out there. Blackra1n/Blacksn0w by GeoHot (an incredibly smart kid) and redsn0w by the Dev team (a small group). Either one is well tested and works fine. Redsn0w works for all iPhones and 1st and 2nd generation iPod Touches and will soon work for 3rd generation iPod Touches. Also, redsn0w no longer requires you to point to a modified firmware file (recall the PwnageTool jailbreak required you to download an ipsw file, then run PwnageTool to modify it and then point to that file during the jailbreak). Thus, its even more idiot proof :) Both jailbreaks work on firmware 3.0 or the current firmware 3.1.2 so if you haven’t already updated your firmware I highly encourage you to do so. Going to World Cup? Don’t forget your iPhone

iPhone in South Africa
I’m heading to South Africa in June for the World Cup! Either you are very jealous or don’t give a rats. Either way, whether heading to South Africa or any foreign country you can bring your iPhone along to stay connected and save money! I’m gonna keep this simple and just focus on my trip in June, but a similar process is likely to work for any other foreign country. If you aren’t sure just ask. Also, I’m not an expert on this so if you have anything to add please do :) Continue Reading…

iPhone4idiots App Review – iFood

iFood
When it comes to the kitchen I bet a lot of you are like me. I can boil some noodles with Ragu, microwave frozen food and heat a can of soup, but that’s about it. Thus, I decided to give iFood Assistant by KRAFT, $0.99, a try. Now there a lot of cooking apps out there, but this is the only one I’ve tried so I have no basis for comparison. I’m just writing this as an idiot in the kitchen that wants to see if his iPhone can help. Overall, it does a pretty nice job whether I’m looking for something to make for dinner tonight or for brunch on the weekend. The amount of recipes in the app probably rivals that of thickest cookbooks. Continue Reading…

Water Damage – What to do if iPhone Gets Wet

Before I started this site, I spent a few months buying damaged iPhones on Ebay and Craigslist. I figured I could fix a few of them and make some money. What I learned was that water damage is a big problem and you need to be prepared for what to do if your iPhone gets wet. Whether you knock your coffee, water or beer onto it, put it in the washing machine, drop it in the pool or worse yet, the toilet what to do next is very simple. I shot this video for fun to go along with this post. Let me know what you think and please subscribe to my YouTube channel. It will help me out :) – click continue reading just below the embedded video for the rest of the article. Continue Reading…

iPhone4idiots App Review – ESPN 2010 World Cup

World Cup Soccer
I’m going to South Africa in June for the World Cup. I think that qualifies me as a fanatic. That said, while far from perfect, I’d say (ESPN 2010 World Cup, Free) is the best app to put on your iPhone to get a tiny bit informed and start getting pumped. When you launch the app you are taken the screen seen here on the left. At the top is the countdown and in the settings menu you have options for favorite team, chat through myESPN or providing feedback or emailing the app to a friend. The guts of the app lie in the middle. It features news (from ESPN of course – sorry Euros), profiles of all 32 countries, full tournament schedule, World Cup history going back to 1930, bracket predictor (ahh, why is there no prize?) and my favorite, venue and city profiles. It was very nice to read about Rustenburg where the United State’s first game against England will be. Continue Reading…
