iPhone4idiots App Review – Angry Birds

AngryBirds
Angry Birds, Clickgamer.com $0.99, is one of the most popular iPhone app games with the highest ratings I’ve ever seen. The app has been rated over 10,000 times with an average review score of 4.87 out of 5 stars. Thus, I figured I had to give it a try. I have to say I can see why its popular. First, it’s simple. It takes 20 seconds to figure out how to play. Second, it doesn’t get old as there are more than 100 levels. Continue Reading…

iPhone 4G Escapes!!!

iPhone 4G
You are looking at a beta model iPhone 4G. In case you didn’t see it on our Facebook page or somewhere else (and this story was everywhere), this iPhone was left at a bar by an Apple employee (I wonder if he or she still has a job). Someone at Gizmodo “found” it, broke it down and posted a writeup about the iPhone 4G on their website. It looked real and two days later Apple asked for the iPhone back pretty much confirming this as what they will be shipping in June. This was a big story and even David Letterman did a “Top Ten Excuses of the Guy Who Lost the iPhone Prototype.” Well, what has Apple added to try and convince you to upgrade or finally take the plunge? iPhone4idiots App Review – The Lorax – Dr. Seuss

TheLorax
Another quality children’s storybook, The Lorax – Dr. Seuss Oceanhouse Media $3.99, that definitely gives you your money’s worth. The app is available for iPhone, iTouch or iPad. I just sat down with my boys before nap and chose “read to me” mode. The only issues – I was falling asleep and forgetting to swipe to turn the page before the 25 minute story was over. iPhone4idiots App Review – Glee, Smule’s Done it Again!

Glee
Glee, Smule $2.99, is a fantastic app for those fans of the show. I know many of you are watching this show and if you like to sing this is the app for you. Sing along to the soundtracks with new songs being added weekly. Can’t sing? Don’t worry, the app gives you the option to add pitch control or pitch and auto-harmonizing to your recording. Just like Smule’s hugely popular app, I Am T-Pain, Glee displays the lyrics for you while you listen to the Glee version of the song as you sing along. Continue Reading…

iPhone4idiots App Review – Quit Smoking with Max Kristen

QuitSmoking
Can the iPhone help you quit smoking? Call me skeptical. Remember my review of Repellent, the app that “claims” to keep mosquitos away through sound, where I called it snake oil. Well, that is pretty much my feelings on Quit Smoking Now with Max Kristen, $7.99. Now that’s expensive for an app, but I guess it’s really just a pack or two. Now I was surprised to see it has 310 ratings in the app store with a score of four stars which for an app is pretty good. I think someone must have stuffed the ballot box. Continue Reading…

Apple Talks iPhone OS 4.0, Better, But I Say Jailbreak

So Steve Jobs was onstage again today. This time to announce details of iPhone 4.0. This will be the latest software update. Almost all you should have firmware of 3.0, 3.1, 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. Anytime you connect to iTunes you are prompted to update to the latest firmware if your iPhone or iTouch does not have it installed. You always want to say NO until you are aware of what the new firmware offers. First, 4.0 will be released in June. Likely just a few days before the 4th generation iPhone is put on sale. While there are numerous things coming, a few things stood out as the biggest along with a list of things still needed. Thus, jailbreaking is still the best option. Continue Reading…

iPad Thoughts, Sales & Insurance

So I went to the Apple Store Saturday afternoon to check out the iPad myself. The “cool” factor on this device is so high that I almost bought one knowing I could resell on Ebay when the 2nd generation iPad with the camera (the one I really want) comes out. Frankly, I was surprised they still had iPads in stock, but Apple reported today that including pre-orders they sold over 300,000 iPads on the first day. Estimates of one million sold in the first year look very conservative now. I’ve been saying all along this is a device for games, TV, video calling and video chat. Well the obvious one I didn’t list was for reading. While I haven’t read many books recently seeing the iPad in person really opened my eyes. The Kindle is toast. Ebooks on the iPad look great! Apple 4.0 Event on 4/8/2010

iPad
For those tired of all the iPad news, Apple has invited a select few to an event Thursday where they discuss details of what’s coming with firmware 4.0. Rumors are multi-tasking will be one thing for sure. I mentioned this along with a few other items I’m hoping for in this post a few weeks ago. While 4.0 probably won’t be released until the 4th generation iPhone comes in June at least we’ll know more about what’s being added. This likely puts an end to any new jailbreak coming for the iPhone until then. Why bother working on jailbreaking firmware that will be outdated soon. In some other iPhone news that I mentioned in my last post, it is now confirmed that Nexflix is coming to the iPhone and iTouch.

Netflix & ABC apps arrive for iPad!

iPad
Very exciting news! With the iPad going on sale tomorrow almost 1000 new apps are hitting the iTunes app store. BTW, you’ll probably notice a ton of the apps you already have are available to update. This is because they are going Universal Binary (whatever that means) to support the iPad as well. You really don’t have to update unless you are getting an iPad, but when you have some extra time I’d go ahead and do it. Now why most of these apps are iPad only, this is great news for iPhone and iTouch users as I’ll explain in a minute. But first a quick mention of two of these new apps, Netflix and ABC Player, both of which are free. ABC Player allows you to stream about 20 shows, including Desperate Housewives, FlashForward, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Modern Family, and V. I’m not sure how much advertising will be added (I wish it were none). The Netflix app requires a Netflix account of course, but if you have one your iPad has access to TV shows and movies from the catalog of Netflix titles available for instant viewing. Now, why is this big news for the iPhone and iTouch? Because my guess is these apps will work on jailbroken iPhones and iTouches within a few months at most :) Further, because these apps are only available for wifi, I predict it will be less than a month until the iPad is jailbroken so 3G unrestrictor will work on it. Also, with ABC on board the other big networks are sure to follow very quickly. Live TV everywhere anytime on your iDevice just got one step closer.
