iPhone4idiots App Review – Tap Zoo

Tap Zoo
Tap Zoo, Street View Labs (Free), is a simulation game where you build a virtual zoo on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. You start with a blank island and start adding animals, paths, walls, rangers and more. A developed zoo looks great as you can see in the picture with the animals and people moving around the zoo. You choose which animals to buy and breed and can add additional land to expand your zoo as it grows. The problem with Tap Zoo is that you need to either be extremely patient to earn enough money to build up your zoo or have to pay real money for in-app purchases to get the items to really make your zoo look impressive. Jailbreaking Update – Redsn0w & Sn0wbreeze for iOS 4.1

In the past week updates to two popular jailbreaks, redsn0w and sn0wbreeze, have been released. The good news is that they work on iOS 4.1 so if you accidently updated and have no patience to wait for the dev team you can jailbreak. The downside is that they are limited in which devices they work on. Redsn0w only works for Macs and iPhone 3G and iPod Touch second generation. Further, if you need ultrasn0w to unlock your device then don’t use this jailbreak. I actually used this jailbreak last night to update my iPhone 3G from 3.1.2 to 4.1. I’m hoping this makes it run faster. Sn0wbreeze only works on windows and jailbreaks iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch first, second and third generation on iOS 4.1. There is no jailbreak for the iPhone 4 on current firmware 4.1. If you think you see one it is a scam. Instructions on how to jailbreak with redsn0w or sn0wbreeze. Continue Reading…

VLC App Arrives – Never Have to Convert Files Again?

For those of you that don’t know VLC, you probably should. VLC is a free and open source multimedia player that plays almost every type of media file. It has almost every codec built-in meaning you never have to download one again. What that means for idiots is that file format doesn’t matter. Whether its avi, mkv or anything else you don’t have to convert it to mp4. It will just play in your VLC player. My friend uses this on his big screen plasma to play high def mkv files from his computer. It works great. On the downside is this app is only available for the iPad for now and early reports are it doesn’t work too well for mkv files. On the positive, it will be available for the iPhone soon, I would think the quality will get better in future versions and early reports are the app works quite well for avi files. This is the most common format you find and what the majority of the links are in the Forum. So if you have an iPad download this app, goto the Forum Downloads – TV Shows and play any of the thousands of links and let me know how you like it.

iPhone4idiots App Review – Hop on Pop

Hop on Pop
Dr. Seuss, Hop on Pop, $3.99, is a fun storybook perfect for trying to get children into reading. The story is filled with silly uncomplicated rhymes and pictures. The only downside – your five year old taking the “Hop on Pop” part a little too seriously. Ouch! Continue Reading…

iPhone4idiots App Review – Chop Chop Ninja

Chop Chop Ninja
My six year old and I have had a blast playing Chop Chop Ninja, Gamerizon $1.99, for the past two weeks. You play as the ninja Iro on a quest to save a princess who has been transformed into a jade statue. You run, jump, kick, fly and collect coins (collecting 100 coins grants you an extra life) while going through four levels of 3 unique boards per level. You control Iro simply by touching the screen to make him run or jump. Tapping behind an evil samuri, snake, scorpian, skull or bow and arrow samuri is how you attack. Actually you tap, tap, tap because it takes multiple strikes to defeat an enemy. Continue Reading…

Cydia Acquires Rock

Interesting news today as Cydia has acquired Rock. Rock had over 2 million users with some 280,000 having purchased apps through Rock. No terms were released but this is good news for the jailbreak community. First its better to have just one jailbreak “app store” as opposed to two. More importantly, while Rock did have a few good apps, it tended to be more buggy. Rock fans might be upset as they liked Rock’s interface and speed, but the only reason it was faster was because they were sloppy. Thus, numerous people including myself had problems with Rock apps not working. I finally quit using Rock due to these issues. Now that its part of Cydia I’m confident these issues will go away.

iOS 4.1 Exploit Found – Jailbreak Sooner vs. Later!!

Awesome news. The same day iOS 4.1 is released @pod2g finds an exploit that will allow it to be jailbroken in near future! Others in the dev team have confirmed it works not only for the iPhone and iPad, but also the just released iPod Touch 4th generation. What’s even better is the exploit is based on hardware so Apple won’t be able to patch it with a future software update. Now there is still tons of work that needs to be done and it may still take over a month, but rest assured a iOS 4.1 jailbreak looks to be coming sooner rather than later!! I can’t wait to get my proximity sensor fixed and have Game Center on my iPhone 4.

iOS 4.1 is Live – Don’t Update if You Want to Keep Jailbreak

So iOS 4.1 went live today. If you are jailbroken and want to keep your jailbreak then DON’T UPDATE. If you could care less about jailbreaking then you should update as this latest firmware actually offers some things you might want. First, if you have a iPhone 3G it is supposed to fix all the slow performance issues your iPhone has had since upgrading to iOS. Second, if you have an iPhone 4 and have had issues with the proximity sensor – it fixes that too. For me the “issues” are putting a call on speaker, hold or mute by accident because the sensor is too sensative. Again, a nice fix if this is a problem for you. Lastly, this firmware launces Game Center which I’m really looking forware to. Game Center is supported on iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPod Touch 2nd generation, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS only. Sorry for all you iPhone 3G users. Apple is giving you the shaft again. I’m adding a Game Center thread in the Forum. Please post and maybe we can play soon!

iTunes Ping Sucks – Stick to What you Know Apple!

Ping
iTunes 10 came out yesterday and offered one major change – Ping. Steve Jobs touted it as “a social network for music”. You were supposed to be able to follow bands and friends and share what music you were buying, listening to and where concerts were being held. Sounds cool right? Well its not. First, Facebook is blocking Ping so you can’t connect with your friends. The only way you can find them is though search or emailing them directly and who wants to bother with that. Second, the software doesn’t find similar music to what you like for recommendations, but instead only what’s popular. Lastly, the software doesn’t seem to filter spam and will let you take whatever name you want. Thus follow me, Kurt Cobain! Continue Reading…

Apple Keynote – iOS 4.1 & Much More!

Apple held its annual September Keynote event yesterday and announced a ton of new products and updates. Updates to iOS 4.1, iPod shuffle, iPod Nano, iPod Touch, Apple TV, iTunes 10, Gamecenter and Ping social music network! It was a lot to take in. I’ll give a few thoughts on all this but for me personally this biggest news is iOS 4.1 coming next week. Steve Jobs claims it fixes the bug that makes the iPhone 3G run so slow on iOS 4.0 and higher. This would be huge for many of you if it really works. Time will tell. Apple’s CEO also stated that it fixed the proximity sensor bug with the iPhone 4. Forget the antenna “death grip” press (that was no big deal), but the proximity sensor on iPhone 4’s is messed up and a fix is welcomed news (again assuming it works). Just try and put your iPhone on between your shoulder and face to free up your hands. You are sure to mute, enable speaker or hang up on your call. It’s annoying, but I will not give up my jailbreak to get this fix. I’ll live with it until the next jailbreak is released. For more in iOS 4.1 and all the other stuff. Continue Reading…
