iPhone4idiots App Review – Cut the Rope

CutTheRope
Move over Angry Birds, there is a new highly addictive physics based puzzle game in town. Cut the Rope, Chillingo Ltd $0.99 ($1.99 for iPad), is simple yet very challenging. Released the first week of October, the game sold over two million downloads in the first 10 days! Cut the Rope has simple controls and is part of Game Center. The game has a green monster named Om Nom and your goal is to feed it candy. Each board contains one piece of candy connected to ropes with three stars placed randomly on the board. You must cut the ropes to feed Om Nom the candy. The faster you feed On Nom the candy and the more stars the candy hits on the way to Om Nom’s mouth the higher your score. Continue Reading…

VLC for iPhone & iPod is Here! Must Have App

VLC
VLC Media Player app for the iPhone and iPod Touch has arrived! VLC is an open source media player that plays almost every type of video file. That’s right, if you are tired of converting files to mp4 you longer have to with this app. VLC Media Player requires an iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or recent iPod Touch 4th generation model using iOS 3.2 or higher. It has a great reputation and I’ve seen it play HD files on a friends plasma and they looked awesome. I’ve been playing with this app all morning catching up on some Sunday shows and this is a must download. Continue Reading…

FaceTime Comes to Macs – PC’s and Skype Next?

FaceTime
Apple held its Back to the Mac event this week and announced numerous things including a MacBook Air (think of a MacBook merged with an iPad) and iLife 11. While many bloggers seem to be focused on this, I found the introduction of FaceTime for the Mac the biggest news. Maybe I just watched too much Jetsons as  a kid, but everyone will be video calling one day. It’s just a matter of when and I think it will be here sooner than most think. The free standalone application enables Macintosh computer users to video call one another or iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4 users. I’ve been testing this the past 24 hours and while it still has a ways to go, progress is being made. Continue Reading…

iPhone4idiots App Review – Fruit Ninja

Fruit Ninja
Fruit Ninja, Halfbrick $0.99, is a hugely popular game for your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. There are two modes of game play, classic and zen. In classic you swipe your finger across the screen to slice the fruit while avoiding the bombs. Slice a bomb and its game over. Miss chopping three pieces of fruit and your slicing fun ends as well. In zen mode you are given 90 seconds to score as high as possible, no bombs and no lives. This game has been downloaded over two million times and the high scores on the leaderboards seem impossible to reach to me. Basically this app has created a drastic drop in productivity for a large number of people. Just remember when you launch the app – there is no tapping. All buttons need to swiped and cut ninja style.

iPhone4idiots App Review – Lola’s Alphabet Train

Lola’s Alphabet Train, BeiZ, Ltd. $1.99, is a great little app to try and get your pre-school or kindergartner spelling. The app claims to be designed for 3 to 8 year olds but I would say 3 to 6 is more like it. The game includes both capital and lower case letters and comes in four languages: English, French, Spanish and German. Both my 4 and 6 year olds seem to think they are playing a game as opposed to spelling. It’s actually gotten them to stop playing Chop Chop Ninja for the past few days! Continue Reading…

Limera1n & Greenpois0n – What You Need to Know

Update #2 10/19/2010 – Greenpois0n now supports iPod Touch 2G, both MC and MB models!

Update 10/12/2010 – Greenpois0n is out. It works on same iDevices as Limera1n, but there is also a Mac version! There is a good guide here.

So yesterday Geohot released Limera1n. This will jailbreak iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G on any firmware 4.0 or higher. It will also jailbreak your iPad on 3.2.2. It currently only works on Windows but a Mac version should be coming very soon. I was going to do a video, but I’m busy and had to use my work PC (I only have Macs at home). Thus, I’ll refer you to a better guide and video than I would have done anyway so keep reading. I did learn one big thing that should help you. Be sure your PC has iTunes 10 or higher and you have it running in the background (just minimize it). If you don’t Limera1n will tell you it worked, but you won’t get the icon and therefore can’t install Cydia. Greenpois0n will not be coming out now. I won’t go into here, but ask in Forum if you are interested. There has been a lot of drama in the jailbreak community. So the best step by step guide is here. This worked for me once I ran iTunes in background. There are tons on videos showing this jailbreak on YouTube now so just search for limera1n and pick one that is only 1 day old with the most views.

4.1 Jailbreaks Greenpois0n & Limera1n Here! Tiny Umbrella Required if Need to Unlock

Great news for those with new Apple devices, Greenpois0n is going to be released any day (likely 10/10/10) and it will jailbreak 4.1 for iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4 and iPad. Further, rumors are Geohot will release a jailbreak for all devices on the one year anniversary of blackra1n, 10/11/2010. For those with jailbroken iPhone 4’s who have been waiting (like me) this means you can get the promitiy sensor fixed, HDR photos and Game Center! I will have a video guide up early next week, but for now it is important that you realize if you ever want to unlock your iPhone, you must upgrade to 4.1 with Tiny Umbrella. If you use iTunes to upgrade before you jailbreak you might never be able to unlock as it upgrades your baseband from 01.59.00. Luckily this is fairly easy to do. Watch the video, leave a comment please and then keep reading for the step by step. Continue Reading…

Verizon iPhone Coming? ATT & Cable Should Be Worried

Verizon
Big news from and about Verizon yesterday. First Verizon’s 4G LTE network is launching in 38 cities this year (Nashville is one!). Verizon claims the LTE network will offer speeds from 5-12 megabits down and 2-5 megabits up and that phones will be allowed on the network in January. In addition, the never ending rumor of the iPhone coming to Verizon was reported by the Wall Street Journal. They reported that it was pretty much a done deal the Verizon meeting with Apple and testing its networks for the heavy data load that’s coming. Could an iPhone with these blazing fast data speeds only be four months away?? I’m starting to think it’s sixty percent likely although I’m highly skeptical of the speeds Verizon is claiming you can get. Nevertheless, even if its half of what they claim this is terrible news for both ATT and cable companies like Comcast and Roadrunner. Continue Reading…

iPhone4idiots Storybook Review – Berenstain Bears

Berenstain Bears
My favorite iPhone app storybook makers, Oceanhouse Media, secured the publishing rights to Berenstain Bear catalog. They already had rights to the entire Dr. Seuss catalog and you may have read one my reviews previously. They are sticking to the same format that makes their children’s storybooks outstanding. Professional drawings and audio, touchable screens and three modes of reading. They have released three Berenstain Bear titles this week all priced at $2.99. For my brief review of The Berenstain Bears Say Their Prayers. Continue Reading…

One Month In – Ping Fail

iTune Ping
iTunes 10 was released one month ago (four weeks actually) at which time I wrote about how badly Ping sucked. Ping is Apple’s attempt to create a social network for music. It’s launch had some major issues and while Apple has fixed the spam problem they apparently will not connect to Facebook anytime soon. Thus, I’m officially declaring it a failure and have a few reasons why. It had been a few weeks since I logged into Ping yesterday, but I wanted to see if things had changed. On the positive, the spam problem seems to have been corrected. I checked a few popular musician’s comments with tens to hundreds of replies and found no spam links. However, you can still pose as anyone you want as my account, Kurt Cobain, still exist. Continue Reading…
