Move over Angry Birds, there is a new highly addictive physics based puzzle game in town. Cut the Rope, Chillingo Ltd $0.99 ($1.99 for iPad), is simple yet very challenging. Released the first week of October, the game sold over two million downloads in the first 10 days! Cut the Rope has simple controls and is part of Game Center. The game has a green monster named Om Nom and your goal is to feed it candy. Each board contains one piece of candy connected to ropes with three stars placed randomly on the board. You must cut the ropes to feed Om Nom the candy. The faster you feed On Nom the candy and the more stars the candy hits on the way to Om Nom’s mouth the higher your score. While this sounds simple you really have to play to see how challenging the levels become. There is a one minute video here that will give you a good idea. As you progress levels start to include bubbles that raise the candy into the air until you tap them to pop and drop the treat. Certain ropes only appear if the candy drops within an area close to them. While the candy is swinging on a rope you have to time your cuts correctly to get it to fall in the direction you want. There are also blue “air blowers” that you tap to swing the candy one direction or another. I promise it isn’t too easy.
At more advanced levels the stars start to disappear if you aren’t fast enough or spiders are there to steal it. For the $0.99 price this game is a winner. If you liked Angry Birds, I’m confident you’ll love Cut the Rope. Just be prepared for the big time suck.
