Skype
While I was gone, Skype finally added video calling to its app with an updated 3.0 version. What’s really great is it works over wi-fi and 3G! That’s right you can be reached on your Skype number anytime. It requires iOS 4.0 or higher and video calls can be made in portrait and landscape. Since you need the front facing camera to make two way calls work properly, only the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4th generation work how you’d want. An iPhone 3GS will do video calls as well but the user on the other end will only see what comes out of your rear camera. You also can Skype desktop computers (Windows or Mac). Be careful, unless you have an unlimited data plan (the best thing about ATT, but I think they’ll take that away from power users one day), video calling over 3G could get expensive. It uses about 4MB of data per minute! I made a test call to my uncle in Florida and the quality while not as good as Facetime was IMO good enough. I’m sure it will only get better from here too.
