Happy New Year – What Apple Has Planned For 2012

Happy New Year! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the support and let you know I’m in Atlanta bringing in 2012. Thus, no updating requests for a few days. Will get caught up when I’m back in Nashville. Next year should be another super one for Apple. The iPad 3 will be here with a higher resolution display in about 75 days! Can’t wait to own one. Even better, there is a great chance the iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE. That is assuming Apple can figure out how to retain the superb battery life their current iPhones enjoy. Apple will also take a stab at selling televisions. We’ll take a wait and see approach on whether or not they are worth buying. Time to drink some alcohol before shooting off large amounts of fireworks in a residential neighborhood. Gotta love the South!

iOS 5.0 & 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak Arrives!

Let’s start with the bad news. There is no iOS 5.0 or higher jailbreak for the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S. Despite all the rumors other sites post, IMO there likely won’t be one until after iOS 5.1 is released which means it is still months away. Now the good news! Today @pod2G released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 that works on iPhone 4 (both GSM & CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation and iPad 1. It uses redsn0w and is very simple. Watch the quick video as I spent that past hour re-jailbreaking my iPhone 4 and my kids iPod Touch 4th generations. If you were already using a tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak keep reading as I recommend doing a full restore to iOS 5.0.1 as opposed to using the Cydia patch. Continue Reading…

The iPhone 3G to iPod Touch Transfer

So I’ve owned and used an iPhone daily for years. My kids used my old iPhones until last week when I gave each of them a new 4th generation iPod Touch. This was an easy decision to make as the 5 and 7 year old boys have no need for a phone. Plus a new iPod Touch is a better computer than an iPhone. Better at playing games, checking the weather (they like that), using a camera, watching videos and video chatting (FaceTime). I got them on Black Friday for $199 with $50 Best Buy gift cards. I’ve never actually owned an iPod Touch before. To see how much I sold my old iPhone 3G for and what I thought of the iPod Touch Continue Reading…

Merkury 360 Rotating Stand for iPad 2

So I thought I’d try this stand since the Belkin Chef Stand & Stylus wasn’t too good. Well, I’m 0 for 2. While this stand does rotate it doesn’t do it in the right way since it doesn’t have a rotating ball axis. That is the key feature to the correct stand. I have yet another new stand on the way. In the meantime, here is the review

Current Jailbreak Status

Lots of jailbreaking news recently as @Pod2G has an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak that he may be about to release to the public that works on iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1. Currently the redsn0w semi tethered jailbreak is your only option for iOS 5. Both jailbreaks will work on any iOS device with an A4 chip – iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generations. This new untethered jailbreak WILL NOT WORK ON THE iPhone 4S or iPad 2. They have an A5 chip that @Pod2G is testing, but I’d be very surprised if it worked on those two devices anytime soon. This is a bummer as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are the only devices for which there is no jailbreak on iOS 5. One is coming but it could be months. On the bright side iPhone 4 and iPod Touch users might finally have an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5. As of today there is still only the redsn0w semi-tethered jailbreak option. I find that it works great for me, but I bet a lot of people are waiting for an untethered one. Confused? There is a color coded chart for the current status here on our jailbreak page. Just know you can’t jailbreak an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S on iOS 5. Hopefully, @Pod2G will release this new untethered jailbreak for most devices before the new year. It’s possible he waits to try and getting it working on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, but that could take months. It’s his call.

Belkin Chef Stand & Stylus Review

So I picked this up over Black Friday when it was $10 off the normal $39.99 price. We are using the iPad daily now that it’s in the kitchen as opposed to being ignored on the bedstand. The boys love using FaceTime or watching YouTube videos at breakfast and before dinner. Not having the ability to rotate the iPad like other stands is a big deal to me and thus I would not recommend buying this stand. Please watch my review here and let me know if you think I was too harsh or on the money?

Top Ten Winterboard Themes for 2011

Made a quick fun video showing off ten cool themes that I used on my iPhone or iPad at some point during 2011. The video shows the name and source for each theme which you can find in Cydia. My favorite one for the moment, Atomic Glow, is free.

There Will Be No iPad Mini in 2012

I’m gonna follow up my last post about when and what the iPad 3 will have with something that won’t happen. Despite rumors from months ago don’t expect an iPad mini in 2012. First, by mini some are referring to price and not screen size. Really? How would Apple drop the iPad to under $300 and still keep anywhere near their profit margins. The iPad 2 parts cost around $300. Yes, they can get cheaper parts, but does Apple make cheap looking poor performing devices? The answer is no . . . well aside from Apple TV. The even more ridiculous is the Apple iPad Mini being a 7 inch tablet. Ever use a 7 inch tablet? It’s not much better than an iPhone when it comes to miss taps. Unless you pinch out to make things bigger you miss taping in a textbox or a link. This makes for a terrible web browsing experience. I can’t see Apple doing this anytime soon.

iPad 3 Coming in March

I don’t like posting all the rumors about upcoming iPhones and iPads that I read. Back in June BGR (BS Gossip Reporting) posted about a 4G iPad 3 coming in 2011. In August, they were still claiming it would launch ahead of the holidays. It gets their website more views, but it made no sense. Having followed this closely for years there are two sources I trust to be on the money and since they both are saying the same thing I’m telling you its true. The iPad 3 will come out in March. This would be exactly one year after the release of the iPad 2. That makes sense. More importantly it will include the 2048 x 1536 retina display! This is twice that of the iPad 2 and is the compelling reason to buy the iPad 3. I will for sure. I’m hopping for double the RAM (1 GB) and Siri but not expecting both. I’d say it’s likely to include Siri but not the RAM. Apple will likely increase the megapixels on the rear camera, but who cares. I continue to say the rear camera on the iPad 2 serves no purpose. The iPad 3 will actually be slightly thicker than the iPad 2 to support dual light bars, but not as big as the original iPad. So if you are thinking of getting a tablet, you might want to wait 3 months.

Untethered iOS 5.0 and 5.01 Jailbreak

5.0 Jailbreak
Chronic Dev Team (the one’s behind Greenpois0n) member @pod2g shows a working untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 in this video! It is on an iPod Touch, but will surely work on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS as well. He tweeted it works on 5.0.1 too. However, he has not tested and it likely will not work on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. He doesn’t own either device so he hasn’t tired, but I doubt it will work on the A5 device. Nevertheless, this is good news for iPhone 4 and iPod Touch owners that have been wanting an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. It shouldn’t be long now. Maybe before the end of the year. For those iPad 2 and iPhone 4S users the wait likely will continue into 2012. Before you ask about what can or can’t be jailbroken see this chart.
