Just released Infinity Blade 2, Chair Entertainment Group LLC $6.99, will set new sales records for an iOS game. I’m thinking $5 million the first week, but we shall see. Honestly, I rarely played Infinity Blade which price has dropped to $5.99 as I don’t really like this type of game. However, I can appreciate how nicely it has been done. It’s just gorgeous. Watch this video to see how the game starts, looks and feels. I was playing while watching Dexter. It was holding my interest as its a bad season IMO with no great villain. Anyway, I ramble as its over an hour past midnight and I have to be up early. I’m sure there are thousands of mostly under 40 males playing this well into the night. I also seeing numerous tweets about it in Japanese. I never stood a chance at making Gamecenter leaderboard.

Last week Apple announced there are now over 500,000 apps in the Apple App Store. While that’s great there is such a variety there is surely an app for almost anything you might want or need it does create one problem. How the heck do you find what you are looking for? Well quixey.com is a search engine made specifically for apps. Type “6 year old sight words” and you get a list. You can filter by iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android or Windows phone. It’s still in a beta phase as the results are too many. A search for “doppler radar” brings up over 100 results. However, the first three listed seem spot on and include my personal favorite Weather Bug. I figure the results will get better and better the more people that use this search engine. It monitors blogs and app review sites to base results not just on app title or developer description, but on what people are saying about the app. Give it a try. I think you might like it.

Time Warner’s TWCable TV app has dropped several channels after some programmers demanded it. While I wish Time Warner would show some guts and tell them if they don’t like it they can remove their channels altogether from their cable network, that likely isn’t a smart business decision. This is yet another battleground in old media versus new technology. See you already pay Time Warner for access to programing through their cable lines into your home. However, the law is not clear on whether or not you can stream this content to your iPad. Apparently, your cable bill isn’t paying for programming to your home, but only programming through the cable lines? The greedy programmers want another cut from either you the consumer or Time Warner. To me this like saying you have to purchase separate contracts to watch television on your Sony versus your Vizio since they are different hardware. It’s a joke. Here is a list of the companies trying to screw you and the channels that have been removed.
Discovery channels: Animal Planet, Discovery, TLC
Fox channels: FX, National Geographic
Viacom channels: BET, CMT, Comedy, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike, VH1

Recall a few weeks ago Amazon launched a cloud music service without having reached any agreement on licenses with the music labels. The ball is in their court and my guess is they’ll ask for too much and end up suing Amazon to try and shut it down. Why don’t these major industries put their time, effort and money into embracing new technology and figuring out how to adjust their business models to it? Instead they hire lawyers and lobbyists to try and keep things the same. The thing that makes me smile is supreme confidence that this hasn’t and won’t work. Take the advice of Google and stop being evil.

Have you looked at the Apple App Store lately? Half of the Top 25 Grossing iPhone apps are FREE! Ok, it’s only 12 of the 25 but I round up. If you don’t understand how this is possible all these apps are what is known as freemium apps. They are free to download and play/use, but generate revenue through the use of in-app purchasing. I see this as a good thing. Users get to try before they buy and developers can rake in tons of money by selling the premium features of their app. For games like Tap Zoo and Smurf’s Village this entails buying items to make your virtual world look cooler (like having an amazing waterfall fountain in your zoo). For Texas Poker and Zynga Poker you buy more chips so you can be big man at the tables. For Contract Killer and iMobster’s you purchase items to help you move further along in the games (like better guns).

The freemium app market is soaring as a year ago there were very few. In fact, from what I read freemium iPhone apps still only account for less than 3% of all apps. Freemium apps are even less prevalent for the iPad, but I suspect this will change very soon. I’d love to know how much these Top Grossing apps make on a monthly basis, but Apple doesn’t give that information. It has to be a lot which means that not only are there a ton of people using the freemium apps but many that tap the Buy button on more than one occasion once they are using it. Given that Farmville is selling gift cards this doesn’t surprise me in the least.

FYI, for you parents out there you can disable in-app purchasing before you get hit with a surprising large bill. I mean you can’t yell at your child for buying a wagon of smurfberries can you? Well, that would set you back a hundred bucks. To disable, just go to Settings-General-Restrictions-Enable Restrictions-In-App Purchases Off. You’ll have to enter a PIN.

Slango, SchroederDev LLC $0.99, the urban dictionary app for the iPhone is sure to make you smile. For example, December 20th’s word was the timely pornament. Yes, as it sounds it is a pornographic Christmas ornament. Did you see one or two over the weekend? Slango has access to 4,000,000 words many of which you’ll have never heard. Of course being slang, you won’t find most of these words in Webster’s dictionary but that’s the point. I like to think of it as a pop culture dictionary or what teenagers are saying guide book. The app has a share button that allows you to easily share any word you want on Facebook, Twitter or email. When you launch the app you are taken to the word of day. There is a definition and example of how its used. Wow, talk about spelling bee flashback! There is a share button I mentioned above and an arrow that lets you go back and see previous Words of the Day for the past week. The bottom tab contains a Search and Bookmark page. I did a quick search for two of my favorite slang words fixin (yes I am a Southerner) and wanker (but I’ve been to dozens of countries). With over 4,000,000 words of course it had the proper definition for both of these words. While I’ve only used this app a few times I’ve found assuming words like wiper beat (when your cars windshield wipers beat to the music in your car) and photobomb (to drop in a picture at the last moment). I’ve had at least one great picture ruined by someone photobombing me with some bunny ears. So if slang and words are one of your things, you should definitely give Slango a look.

On5 just released, Charadium, which is basically Pictionary for your iPhone/iTouch. It is multi-player only as you draw and guess with people all over the world using the Plus+ social play network. If you’ve never used Plus+ don’t worry neither had I. Just launch the app and join. It takes about a minute to type in username and email and then you are playing. Best of all – the app is FREE TODAY and will only be $0.99 after that. I’ve played for about an hour and its really well done and very fun! When you launch the app you see the screen here on the left. I did Quick Game which lets you join a Full Game on the Plus+ network which has 15 rounds. It’s very intuitive. Just type the word of what you think the person is drawing. First one to get it right wins. When its your turn to draw you’ll see the word displayed and have at it. My drawings look about like my 5 year olds! Nevertheless, someone guessed it everytime but once (where I lost 5 points). Play with friends allows you to enter a room name to join on the Plus+ network that your friends can connect to whether in the same room or across the country. Full Game takes you to a public room where four players are required to start. Even though the app was just released this takes about one minute to occur. Private rooms only require 2 players to start. Charadium supports seven languages and includes a hint system to help you on more difficult words (pity for example – which was the word I couldn’t get people to guess). There also is a 9-color palette to help you with your drawings and a scoreboard is displayed after each round. Currently 6 players is the maximum capacity for any room (private or public) but my guess is that will be raised soon. To get a feel for game play see the picture here on the right. I’m in a public room and the player named kevlar is trying to draw the word school. At the very top you can see that the time bar in orange running out. In the left column are the different player’s guesses. Just use the keyboard at the bottom to type your guess and the dashed lines just above the keyboard let you know how many letters the word has. As time runs out they give you one or two letters. Yet another great feaure of the game is if you hit the “Share” button after a game is finished, it will give you a room code that you can put on their website and see all the pictures that were drawn and all the guesses your party made. Nothing better than making fun of someone’s artistic ability or rather absurb guesses! Again, if you go today you can download this app for free. Let me know what you think.

I hope the title caught your eye. I think a lot of you might really like this app. Oh, by the way – its FREE! I’ve never used voice recognition software much but Dragon is a big name in that space. Well, yesterday they released a free app for the iPhone. I’ve used it half a dozen times today and I’m impressed. My favorite feature is how easy it is to stop typing and start talking for updates to Facebook, Twitter or sending email. First, the simplicity of the app is perfect. Launch the app and you see the screen on the right a little below. There are only three buttons. Tap the red circle in the middle to record. The bottom left keyboard is for editing the few mistakes the dictation software will make and the bottom right button lets you easily paste the text to any app! For those like me that have rarely used software like this don’t expect it to be perfect. At least every other sentence will have a mistake. However, they are usually small (like leaving the “s” off a plural word). Once your dictation is displayed you tap on the keyboard at the bottom left and quickly edit your sentences/paragraphs. Now for the good part. Once its done you tap the bottom right button and save the dication to the clipboard. Once there you can close Dragon and open any other app and paste the text with a simple double tap. That’s right, Facebook, Twitter, email, text or whatever app you need to type into its done. In the app store the writeup by Dragon claims you can type five times faster. Well, I’m not gonna go that far as alot of it depends on how much you are typing/dictating. The longer the text, the more time Dragon will save you. Maybe you don’t type emails or Facebook at all because you find the keyboard too slow. Well, watch this 3 minute video and see what you think. That little computer in your pocket just keeps getting better and better. Typing multiple paragraphs was something I never considered because it took too long and I was never too far from a PC. However, with Dragon I might start doing it a lot more. What do you think?? Give it a try – its free which is nice because this is an app that IMO, many would pay for.

Given the early returns of our latest poll, I decided I had to do an app review of my favorite app, Tweetie 2 ($2.99). I can’t believe the majority of you are not using Twitter? If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch then you really need to give it a try. Trust me on this and whether you agree or disagree – TRY IT – and give me some comments on this article please. The iPhone and Twitter are like peanut butter and jelly or chocolate and anything. Please, do yourself a favor and take a minute to hear my case ☺

First, there are tons of twitter apps for the iPhone. I prefer Tweetie, but its fine if you like Twitterrific, TwitBit, TweetDeck, Birdfeed, Twittelator Pro, Simply Tweet or Twitterfon. Some of these are free (like TweetDeck) so they might be the best place to start. Why are there so many? It’s the chocolate thing I mentioned. They all are popular because Twitter and the iPhone go so well together. I have no problems with any of these, but I’m reviewing Tweetie 2 so lets get on with it.

When you launch the app you are taken to the accounts page where you add your twitter account. Seen at the very top of this article, I have two. Actually, this is from Tweetie 1 (I have more accounts on Tweetie 2 and on Tweetie 2 you also see the avatar on the accounts page). Why do you want more than one account? Well I’ll get into that later, but I find it helpful to separate my tweets between my friends, iPhone hobby, business contacts and people I find interesting. So that’s four accounts I have. Just tap one of the accounts and you are taken to the page seen here on the right. The far left tab shows the most recent tweets of the people you are following. One nice feature of Tweetie 2 is to refresh you can just slide your finger down and release and it will update for you. I’ve heard many people say, “What can you say or communicate in 140 characters or less?” Well, a lot actually. Many tweets will have a clickable (or is it tapable) link to take you to a picture, video or website article. The 140 characters can act like a headline. The next tab seen here on the left is the @ page. This is filled with tweets directed at you. Each person there is speaking directly to me. The reason for this is simple. Whether you have 10 or 10,000 people following you if you tweet something like “Meet me at the movies.” or “I think it might rain.” you use the @name so other people following you know that you were not talking to them. This is a great way to carry on a conversation or ask for help. The next tab is direct message where you can tweet someone and keep it off the grid. That is, it only goes to that one person and others following you or them do not see it. Personally, I rarely use direct message. The next tab is the search page. Here you can search by name or subject for topics or people to follow. More interesting though, this tab shows the current trending topics. Seen on the right you can see presently that #mylasttweetonearth, Halloween and Windows 7 are three of the four most tweeted phrases. Yes, sometimes it’s junk, but you’ll be amazed how quickly breaking news jumps to the top of the list. Frankly, sometimes the silly TT (trending topics) are fun to chime in on as they fulfill some guilty pleasure. Balloon boy was a big a few days ago and anytime someone dies or there is an anniversary of a big event it usually becomes a trending topic. Personally I got a kick out of Anne Frank becoming a TT from all the “hiding in the attic” comments that Balloon Boy inspired. I prefer to look for current news here as opposed to CNN, Fox or MSNBC. It’s definitely less biased and depressing. Lastly on this tab is the Nearby function seen here on the left which is amazing. It quickly GPS locates your spot then zooms down to google maps with blue flags showing all the tweets around you. Tap the flag and the tweet is displayed. IMO, this function will have some amazing game applications in its future. I’ve used it to talk trash at LP Field during the Titans games (geez, don’t get me going on that subject and so much for my Super Bowl prediction) or see what neighbors are tweeting about. My wife finds this feature a little scary, but not me. Look at the screenshot again. I’m checking tweets around Vanderbilt University. Someone named Errean is talking about how bad and boring baseball has become. I don’t know this person, but agree so I may tweet back something like “@Errean – I agree. Only my grandparents still like baseball, but they still listen to it on radio!” Maybe I make a friend, maybe not. Lastly, is the more tab seen here on the left. It basically shows your twitter profile including who you are following and who is following you. If you find someone interesting you can go there and see whom they are following and/or who is following them. It’s a great way to find people with similar passions.

Why four accounts? Well, I use iPhone4idiots to promote the website and answer people’s questions. I have another account for my real job. I use hirtme to follow a lot of people with similar interests – mainly tech, iPhone, iPod and soccer. I use the fourth account to follow my closest friends to keep up with what’s going on with them. And Tweetie 2 makes it so simple. Yes, at first it’s a little intimidating with all the tweets. Actually, my biggest gripe with Twitter is when you first register they automatically start you off following 20 people. My recommendation is the first thing you should do is unfollow all 20. Get their tweets out of there and pick two or three subjects you are passionate about and search for ten minutes and pick one or two people to follow in each area. Maybe add one or two celebrities or sports stars you like and follow them. Give it a week and then remove those you don’t find interesting and add and few more. If after three weeks you aren’t hooked, go back to Facebook or whatever floats your boat. My guess is you’ll be tweeting @iphone4idiots soon!

Give it a try. Again, IMO the key is starting by searching for the subjects you are most passionate about. It’s a big world and there are a lot of fascinating people out there talking and doing things in your areas of interest. I bet soon many of you will use your Twitter app more than any other. I rarely open Facebook anymore although there are cool apps that update both Twitter and Facebook at the same time. Obviously, I recommend Tweetie 2 since it’s the app I use the most. If you’ve read this far please do me a favor and leave a comment. I’m very curious why you guys are not tweeting.

Well, see how big a fan your really are with this iPhone or iPod game. Scene It, Twilight, $4.99, from RealArcade plays just like the Scene It board games. There are Twilight-themed questions, movie clips, puzzles and mini-games. There also are two movie trailers from the upcoming New Moon which is scheduled to be released November 20.

For full disclosure, I have never seen Twilight. I just don’t make it to movies these days. However, given its popularity I figured I had to review it. There are six different games with over 40 puzzles each in single player mode. There also is a multi-player mode where you can challenge friends and post your scores to Facebook. However, after playing the multi player game called, Twilightning Trivia, it is the usual pass and play iPhone or iPod game. Unless I missed it, you can’t even upload scores to Facebook, you would have to go post them separately. This makes it no different that most iPhone games and I can’t wait til games start uploading scores so there is a global leaderboard. Basically, you have to answer a trivia question before the timer runs out. Get it right and you pass your iPhone or iPod to the next player. Get it wrong and you are out. Last player left wins. The single player game has the movie clips and puzzles that slowly disappear to reveal the image behind them. The faster the answer the more points you get. I found this game fun despite not knowing the movie. Scene It seems a natural fit for your iPhone or iPod to me. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before there is Scene It True Blood, Seinfeld and all the other classic TV shows. At $4.99 its a little pricey as with about 250 questions, once you’ve played the game some you start getting repeat questions – Thus, I would say only get it if you are a huge fan.

Typical Question – You can see the timer running out at the bottom

When I first jailbroke my iPhone well over a year ago every must have Cydia app list included WinterBoard. Until recently, however, I’ve never really used it. As most of you know, WinterBoard enables you to customize the look of your jailbroken iPhone in many ways. In this post I will show you the five themes I’ve had on my iPhone most recently and ask the key question – To Poof or Not to Poof? At this point there are thousands of themes you can download for your iPhone. Some are very basic and essentially just change the background or wallpaper of your iPhone or iPod. Others do this, plus add customized icons and sliders to give your theme an even more artistic look. And still others, do all this plus add customized sounds to your iPhone (for when you lock, unlock, get voicemail, etc.) and customized looks for certain icons like your phone. The first theme I’ve had on my iPhone recently is Leopard OS X Theme seen above (xSellize Source in Cydia). I really like this theme. The custom icons for the phone (picture of iPhone) and Installous (jolly roger flag) are two of my favorite. The entire theme just looks pretty and cleaner than most. The only downside is that I personally don’t like the look of the customized phone keyboard. Just looks weird to me, but I’m sure there is a way to use the default keyboard if I really wanted to. The simple lockscreen, however, looks nice and the iPhone says “locked” and “unlocked” when you turn it on and off. The second theme I’ve recently had on my iPhone is the Tennessee Titans theme – the lockscreen of which is seen here on the right (ModMyi Source in Cydia). As you can see it clearly shows what team I support. There pretty much is a theme for your favorite sports team whether college or pro. I like the way most of the icons are the flaming helmet logo as opposed to squares (see pic below after article). Some of the icons are still squares as there are so many apps that its impossible for any theme to have customized icons for every app out there. Given the pathetic 0-4 start, I no longer use this theme for the moment. A third theme I’ve used recently is A Nature Theme (ModMyi source in Cydia). This one is simple as well, but the background wallpaper image is really nice. The icons are also dimmed down a bit. Check out the images in the photos below the article. Speaking of the beauty of nature leads me to my favorite theme of the moment (dope theme from xSellize). This theme is too funny. When you use the slider on the customized lock screen you hear the bubbling water of a bong. There are a half dozen or more pictures that rotate as the background all of which show the beauty of this flower. You can see the quality of the screen in the picture here on the left. When you get a new voicemail or text message a song lyric will play which is again devoted to the dope theme. For a voicemail I get, “I want to get blunted my brother.” Of course, this one probably isn’t for the office unless you work at a really laid back place. The last theme I’m going to mention in this post is Kids theme (ZodTTD & MacCiti). Seen just below here on the right, this one has some of the best icons around. Check out the Photos, Settings, Camera, Clock, App Store and Mail icons. All very nice. My 5 year old loves the Thomas the Trian slider on the lock screen (see pics below). When you slide it you hear a voice say “Hi Daddy”. My guess is it wouldn’t be too hard to insert your own audio file there, but I hear my kids voices enough already. The phone keyboard also has a clean artistic customized look I would describe as crayon (again see pics at bottom of article). So as you can see there are lots of ways to give your iPhone or iPod a new look and feel. It’s so simple to switch themes, just open Winterboard to select new theme and respring, that I now change themes almost daily.

So since I change themes so often and am paying attention to the way my screen looks, I want to know how many people use Poof? Poof lets you hide your icons. Yes, you can dim them in Winterboard, but I like them gone. Some of the themes backgrounds are so nice that I want to see it without icons. This is exactly what Poof does. Hide your icons so you can see your wallpaper. As I mentioned even your best themes can’t have customized icons for every app. So generally, I like to hide most of my icons and appreciate the wallpaper. I think I’m way in the minority on this however. It’s simple to do though, just open BossPrefs – Poof and toggle them on and off. So let me know what themes you like and do you Poof away your icons???

Phone keypad for Kids Theme
Kids theme lockscreen – They all love Thomas!
Nature Theme
Snow Leopard Lockscreen
Titans Theme with flaming icons
