I’ve been asked once or twice what is the worst iPhone app? I wasn’t really sure, but now I know for me it’s Skype. For the first time ever I’ve been having a problem with my iPhone battery. Almost daily for the past month the battery dies sometime in the late afternoon. I’ve turned my screen brightness down as low as I can handle. In over three years of iPhone ownership I’ve never has this problem. Sure I’ve read lots of iPhone battery complaint articles, but I’ve always been able to make it through the day before. The good news. I know the problem is being caused by the Skype app. Oh, and the app sucks for other reasons too.

Skype is a huge company with a great reputation for cheap long distance and international calling. My uncle in Greece loves their service. I only started using the Skype app a month ago. See I make almost no long distance calls, but I joined an IM chat group that I wanted to follow closely. It’s running in the background and I noticed my iPhone is unusually hot at times. I’m not sure how often the Skype app is checking for new IM’s, but it must be constantly.

Further proof, not that I needed it, was provided by none other than @chronic (Chronic Dev team founder) who last week tweeted,
“I think Skype is strongly contributing to my battery drain, anyone know if it’s possible to fix? (without deleting, need the IM part of it)”

There is no doubt the IM part of the Skype app kills your iPhone battery. Thus, I’m bringing a charger with me to the office. Thanks Skype.

Oh, and the IM part of the app sucks too. It NEVER loads history beyond one screenful and doesn’t always receive messages. That is strange given the battery drain you would think it must be checking all the time. Sadly no. If I haven’t seen an new IM within an hour or two, I know I need to try and refresh. Once I missed over a screenful of something interesting. I had to login through my Mac to load the history to read the full conversation. Like I said, the app will not load history.

Yes, I’d say it’s the worst app on my iPhone by far. I wonder if it would still be this bad if Microsoft hadn’t bought them?

UPDATE 5/2/2012 Website is now just a landing page for ads. These things never last long.

I know things have been depressing ever since the USA shutdown MegaUpload. Well here is something I hope cheers you up. Open Safari on your iPhone, iPod or iPad and goto iOSLiveTV. There is no jailbreak required. The home screen gives you seven choices (United States, United Kingdom, Deutschland, France, Italia, PoccNR and XXX). The channel selection is massive. I haven’t looked through them all, but the United States includes (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, Syfy, USA, A&E, Showtime, Cinemax, FX, ESPN, ESPN 2, Fox Soccer, TNT, History, MTV, Food Network, Discovery, CNN, Spike, truTV, Speed and more). The network stations include a East and West feed and there is even a channel guide showing what comes on next.
I’ve spent a few hours streaming over 3G and the quality is really great. There are a few adds, but nothing intrusive once you start streaming. The few times it stopped all I had to do was tap the play button again and it picked right back up. The stream is about 40 seconds behind the cable feed. Watching over 3G will eat through your data plan fast so you probably want to stick to wifi. Websites like this have popped up in the past, but they never last long. I’m sure you’ll be reading more about iOSLiveTV’s legal troubles soon.

I know because so many celebrities use them. While you likely can’t afford to live or stay in the places they do, drive the same expensive car or wear the same fancy clothes, you can rock the same smart phone. When I say of lot of celebrities I mean it. Just a few include Ryan Phillipp, David Beckham, Jessica Alba, Sandra Bullock, Kristie Alley, Demi Moore, Lenny Kravitz, Jenny Mccarthy, Megan Fox, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Bieber, Sharon Stone, George Clooney, Paris Hilton and many more.

Took a trip to Ponte Vedra beach for Spring Break and the highlight of trip for the 7 year old was finding a shark tooth? Even more surprising to me is a report that more Americans read ebooks on computers than eReaders, tablets or phones? If true, that just shows how tablets are still in their infancy. They surely are the way people will read most everything within a decade. While I was gone there were more rumors about the 7 inch iPad. Not happening in 2012 and likely never will. While I’m dispelling rumors, don’t believe the iPhone 5 is coming in June. Supposedly, a FoxConn employee leaked this information. I’d trust my tarot card reading more than that source. Since no one is asking my thoughts on Google’s Project Glass. Seems like the future, but way too ambitious at this point. It has huge fail written all over it. I think I prefer The Masters app to the March Madness one. Just seems to run smoother. Enjoy the weekend.

My five year old teaches me things all the time. Yesterday it was the VoiceOver feature of the iPhone, iPad or iPod. VoiceOver is a feature mainly for those with visual impairments as it allows the device to speak the names of onscreen menus and other items to the user. While this is a vital feature for some, it can drive you nuts the first time you encounter it. I’m not sure how but he turned it on. To do so goto Settings>General>Accessibility and toggle VoiceOver on. When you do this you are given the warning, “VoiceOver changes the gestures used to control iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue?” Apparently, my five year old tapped yes and a few minutes later came to me wondering why his iPod didn’t “work” anymore. I knew what he had done but it took me 15 minutes and a Google search to figure out how to turn it off. See a Siri like voice reads everything you tap once. Including items in the status bar (like how much battery you have left). You must double tap to open anything. I figured that out pretty quickly, but could not get the Settings to scroll down to Accessibility. Then I read that you need to use three fingers in VoiceOver mode. It seems to operate a little slow to me, but the way it reads webpages and everything else is pretty cool. So if you hear your iDevice talking and see a box around everything you tap like in the picture below that’s what has happened. Might have to enable it on my wife or mom’s iPhones to watch them freak out.

It appears AT&T finally has a coherent policy on data throttling. Their stated policy of throttling unlimted data plan users at 3GB has finally been implemented. Well, at least for me. In past posts I showed how I was going as high as 10GB and still not getting any message from AT&T. Yesterday, I got the text displayed here and as you can see in speedtest results below I have certainly been throttled. This happened exactly when I went over 3GB. For once AT&T is on it. So now the question is whether or not to stick with AT&T?

So you can see the text I received last night from AT&T. Since I was at the USA El Salvador soccer game I ignored it til this morning when I hit *DATA# (*3282#) to see how much data I have used this month. As you can see I was just barely over 3GB. The previous month I went over 10GB and never got a message from AT&T. It appears their stated policy of throttling unlimited data plan users at 3GB has begun. Next I ran a few speedtests to see if I was in fact getting throttled. The results show my download speeds are about twenty times slower than my previous unthrottled test back on March 5. To be fair, that was a really high result. I typically get between 2-3 Mbps. So my download speed has been reduced by a factor of ten. Forget about streaming or downloading torrents at that speed.

So what to do now. As you might recall I switched over to Straight Talk for a month and found the service equivalent to AT&T. At only $40 per month it is way cheaper and I didn’t get throttled when I went over 3GB. I used just under 5GB for the month. I would highly recommned Straight Talk for your iPhone. However, since I’m on a family AT&T plan there are other factors to consider. Mainly, I don’t pay the bill. Also, if you have an iPhone 4s your data speeds will be slower as the iPhone 4s on AT&T uses the HPSA+ technology which is faster than 3G.

At least there are options. This will become a much bigger issue with the 4G LTE iPhone 5 as data consumption will drastically increase. We’ll see how the carriers respond. I’m also on the lookout for the next lawsuit against AT&T. Anyone what to take me case to court?

iPhoto is a really cool app that I’ll review in a post shortly. While you can only download it if you are on 5.1 firmware, there is a simple work around to install it on a 5.0.1. It’s working great on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Here are the steps which I show in the video.
To install iPhoto on your jailbroken 5.0.1 iPhone 4 or iPad 2
1) Open iFile and goto System-Library-CoreServices and tap on SystemVersion.plist. Tap Property List Viewer and then change ProductVersion from 5.1 to 5.0.1. Respring.
2) Download iPhoto from Installous. You can get it from the App Store ($4.99) but I recommend against it. There are many reports of people having problems doing this. Use Installous.
3) Go back into iFile and change back to iOS 5.0.1 and respring again. Don’t skip this step. If you do iTunes and Cydia will remove any apps not compatible with 5.1 which it thinks you are on.
4) Open Cydia and install iPhoto501Fix package from BigBoss. That’s it. Works for iPhone 4 and iPad 2 on 5.0.1 jailbroken with Absinthe for sure.
A little over a week ago Apple bought a small company named Chomp. Terms weren’t disclosed, but Chomp is an app search engine. It seems Apple wanted their 20 employees to help make searching the App Store better. Does that mean a App Store redesign? Doubt it, but with hundreds of thousands of apps to search through having better search results and suggestions would be helpful.

In today’s digital age I don’t understand why a company the size of AT&T can’t manage its’ network better. AT&T updated the information page on its’ website with a throttling section. The page states that this starts at 3GB. Well this simply isn’t happening here in Nashville. Dial *DATA# (*3282#) from your iPhone and AT&T sends you a text with how much data you have used that billing cycle. You can see in the picture that this iPhone has been over the cap since February 17 and still no text about throttling. Since they have this information why can’t they start throttling at 3GB? Are they just doing it in some markets or is the fact they lost $850 in small claims court caused them to abandon the policy. Doubt it, but I’m curious.

So AT&T finally decided to clarify their data throttling policy. Yesterday they announced that anyone still on the unlimited data plan (I believe that number is north of 15 million) would be throttled when the went over 3GB. The current headline on CNN is, “AT&T increases limits on data usage”. What horse manure, but that’s pretty much all Ted Turner produces. No, they didn’t increase anything. Maybe they are finally becoming transparent with their policy but I’m not sure that is true either. It was supposed to start today, but nothing has been sent to one AT&T iPhone I can still check on even though it is over 6GB this month. Now this is a good thing, but if the policy is throttle over 3GB and they aren’t doing it here in Nashville, I bet they are likely still doing it under 3GB in other areas. The bottom line is AT&T is too big to manage their network tightly. This policy announcement comes after a California man won $850 from AT&T in small claims court over data throttling. I guess they were paying attention to that. I’m sure this won’t be enough to prevent the next person from taking AT&T to court. I’ll let you know the judge rules. For the record, I’m still happy with the service Straight Talk is providing on my iPhone 4. I’m just under 3GB for the billing cycle so far. If you are interested in making the change see this video.
