Cydia App Review – Infinidock and ProSwitcher

ProSwitcher
For those of you whose iPhone or iTouch is jailbroken I thought I’d share a few cool apps. First, watch this two minute video here to see what these apps do. IMO, this is the best video I’ve made in awhile. If you agree please leave me a comment. Infinidock, $0.99 on the BigBoss repo by chpwn, allows you to add upto 10 icons to your dock. While simple, this is very powerful. Continue Reading…

Firmware 3.1.3 Released – Jailbreakers Don’t Upgrade

Apple has just released new firmware for the iPhone 3.1.3 (7E18), a minor OS update for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPod touch G1, iPod touch G2, and iPod touch 3G. It includes a fix for the iPhone 3GS battery level reporting, fix for apps crashing with Japanese Keyboard and fix for apps crashing upon launch. None of this is very important which is a little surprising since its been awhile since the last firmware upgrade. A major firmware upgrade will occur on or before the newest iPhone is released this late Spring or early Summer. IMO, I wouldn’t upgrade your firmware yet as none of this seems like anything you’d want and if you have a jailbroken iPhone as always DO NOT UPGRADE your firmware until the dev team clears it. Unless you want to risk losing your jailbreak or unlock, just wait til its cleared. It wont’ be long :)

Jailbreaking Update – Redsn0w is out!

iPhone in South Africa
For anyone considering jailbreaking I thought I’d give a little update as a few things have changed over the past couple of months. First, to review there are basically two main jailbreaks/unlocks out there. Blackra1n/Blacksn0w by GeoHot (an incredibly smart kid) and redsn0w by the Dev team (a small group). Either one is well tested and works fine. Redsn0w works for all iPhones and 1st and 2nd generation iPod Touches and will soon work for 3rd generation iPod Touches. Also, redsn0w no longer requires you to point to a modified firmware file (recall the PwnageTool jailbreak required you to download an ipsw file, then run PwnageTool to modify it and then point to that file during the jailbreak). Thus, its even more idiot proof :) Both jailbreaks work on firmware 3.0 or the current firmware 3.1.2 so if you haven’t already updated your firmware I highly encourage you to do so. Going to World Cup? Don’t forget your iPhone

iPhone in South Africa
I’m heading to South Africa in June for the World Cup! Either you are very jealous or don’t give a rats. Either way, whether heading to South Africa or any foreign country you can bring your iPhone along to stay connected and save money! I’m gonna keep this simple and just focus on my trip in June, but a similar process is likely to work for any other foreign country. If you aren’t sure just ask. Also, I’m not an expert on this so if you have anything to add please do :) Continue Reading…

Adding Sources to Cydia

Restriction

So after jailbreaking one thing you’ll want to do is add sources. What’s a source? Well a source is essentially a web host (URL) which can be added to cydia to get additional software packages, themes, wallpapers, apps, games and more. Open cydia and you come to the screen seen here on the left with five tabs on the bottom (Cydia, Sections, Changes, Manage and Search). Cydia Store Products are the paid for apps. These are very nice and include things like 3G Unrestrictor, $2.99, which is a must if you like to stream video. Continue Reading…

Appulo/Installous are Down While they Upgrade

Wolf
Appulo.us the website that allows jailbroken iPhones and iPods to download almost every app for free is down. Well sort of. You may have noticed recently that its been much slower and Installous (the related app that lets you install the cracked up directly to your iDevice without syncying) has been horrible. Well, I thought it was due to firmware 3.1.2. However, the problem is actually that the website is just too popular. The message seen here on the left states that 3 million people visit appulo.us on a daily basis. WOW! Anyway, they are adding additional servers to handle the traffic, but this takes time. So in the meantime they’ve introduced Troll Bridge. Basically you have to answer a question that mainly only the crackers involved with appulo know. This is intentional to keep people out until the site can handle the capacity. It should only be a few days or weeks. In the meantime if you have to have an app either figure out the question or pay for one???????

Jailbreakers, Have you have changed your root password?

In case you haven’t read it, some Dutch teenager hacked a bunch of iPhones and asked for five euros to fix them. You can read about it here. The main point is if you’ve jailbroken your iPhone you really should change the password. It’s very easy. I’ve got two easy ways to do it and a video that shows how. PwnageTool Jailbreak from Dev Team – YES!

If you are like me and on a Mac, blackra1n didn’t help you any. But once one jailbreak comes out, the others follow quickly. Check out the video that shows me re-jailbreaking my iPhone this morning to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1.2 firmware. Rate and comment on it please. Yes, I need a tripod! It took about 30 minutes. PwnageTool is from the Dev Team who are widely regarded as providing the best jailbreaking tools. This is only for Macs and works for the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iTouch 1G & 2G, but not iTouch 3G. PC’s must wait or use another jailbreak tool like blackra1n. Continue Reading…

New Poll & Cheif idiot’s weekend thoughts . . .

So there was a lot of jailbreaking news this week and expect more early next week with the expected release of blackra1n. Should be exciting if you’re that geeky. Today had a little less geeky news of Tweetie 2 being released. It’s $3 even if you already have Tweetie and the developer is going to sell a ton. I use Tweetie as much as any other app. I love it. So this got me to thinking . . . . . . . Continue Reading…

Why Jailbreak? WinterBoard Themes – To Poof or Not?

SnowLeopardWhen I first jailbroke my iPhone well over a year ago every must have Cydia app list included WinterBoard. Until recently, however, I’ve never really used it. As most of you know, WinterBoard enables you to customize the look of your jailbroken iPhone in many ways. In this post I will show you the five themes I’ve had on my iPhone most recently and ask the key question – To Poof or Not to Poof? At this point there are thousands of themes you can download for your iPhone. Some are very basic and essentially just change the background or wallpaper of your iPhone or iPod. Others do this, plus add customized icons and sliders to give your theme an even more artistic look. Continue Reading…
