So Apple released firmware 4.0.2 yesterday to patch the hole that comex used for jailbreakme.com. It had something to do with PDF files letting you write code to the iPhone. Thus, if someone wanted to spread a virus they could use the same “hole” unless it was fixed. In about 24 hours Saurik (the hippy genius behind Cydia) has written a patch for jailbreakers that does the same thing. Thus, you don’t have to worry about any virus every using this same vulnerability. Just open Cydia and search for and install PDF Patch (CVE-2010-1797). Don’t worry, it preserves your jailbreak and its free. What’s even better is that it works on all iPods, iPhones and iPads. Apple’s patch ignored 1st generation iPods and iPhones. Now while I can’t understand why people are holding onto these old devices the fact that Apple wouldn’t fix them as well is just poor customer service. They want you to buy new iPhones and iPods so badly they left older devices open to hacking. While I think this isn’t too likely, its better to be safe than sorry.Bottom line, if you have a jailbroken iPod, iPad or iPhone install this patch.

OK, the title is a little misleading, but for many this is absolutely true. MyWi, $19.99, turns your jailbroken iPhone into a wireless router. The app works with all jailbroken iPhones (3G/3GS/4) and iPad on 3.1.2 or later firmware. You can get MyWi by downloading the RockApp in Cydia. Now the wifi speeds through your iPhone’s 3G connection vary greatly, but they are certainly fast enough to use (I always get at least 100kB/s). To learn more about MyWi, see a video demonstration and enter contest to win one of eight free bumpers. Once you setup your iPhone as a wifi hotspot there is no limit to how many devices that can connect to it. However, there is a WEP password you can (and should) set so other’s don’t jump on your network and start using your data. While I’m on an unlimited plan many of you probably have data caps you can’t go over without paying more. I haven’t noticed any battery drain, but part of that may be due to the vastly superior iPhone 4 battery. I just can’t drain it in a day no matter what I do. So while this is expensive for an app it can easily pay for itself very quickly. Do you really need a 3G iPad (as opposed to wifi only) if you can just use your iPhone for that purpose? Do you pay for internet connections at Starbucks or airports? Do you ever lose your internet connection at home or work? Ever take a trip somewhere and wish you had an internet connection whether in the car or at your hotel or rental? Yes, this is a great reason to jailbreak and like every other awesome jailbroken app, one Apple will one day offer to everyone. Watch the video review below for a speedtest comparison to Comcast cable. Also, I’m giving away eight iPhone bumpers to the first eight people that leave a comment on this video and put “bumper” at the end of their comment. Make sure you are a subscriber as well. Just leave a comment and the color you want. I’ll do my best but there are 4 yellow, two clear, one red and one hot pink. Send me a PM on YouTube with where you want me to ship your bumper.
If switching to T-Mobile in USA (really the only option because you can’t switch to Verizon or Sprint cause they are not GSM networks) you will have to cut your SIM card down to microSIM size. I haven’t done this but seen many videos and it doesn’t look to hard. Here is a guide. The key is to align the three center areas.

Told you it wouldn’t be long. And Comex made it worth the wait as this is the easiest most idiot proof jailbreak ever! This is a web based jailbreak meaning you do it all on your iPhone. That’s right you don’t hook it up to your computer. Just open Safari on your iPhone and goto http://www.jailbreakme.com and slide to start the install. In about five minutes you’ll have Cydia. This jailbreak works on all iPhones running 4.0 or 4.0.1 and iPads running 3.2.1. Be sure to backup your SHSH blobs with tiny umbrella here before you jailbreak. Also, the website and Cydia are slammed right now so it may be slow. IMO, the best thing to do is wait a week to see what bugs pop up and need to be worked out. In the meantime please comment and rate my YouTube video of this jailbreak.
Well, I’ve told people for well over a year that it was not true and today the federal government made it official. Jailbreaking AND Unlocking your iPhone is legal. Take that Steve! Every three years the Library of Congress’ Copyright Office reviews and authorizes exemptions to a 1998 federal law that prohibits people from bypassing technical measures that companies put on their products to prevent unauthorized uses. The iPhone was given such an exemption so jailbreak and unlock away.

If you have an iPhone 4 and have been waiting for a Jailbreak, your wait is almost over. This is great news if you miss having 3G Unrestrictor, Winterboard or free apps! Members of the Dev Team (comex, planetbeing, etc.) have been hard at work and there tweets suggest its coming any day. In fact, Mike Cohen tweeted this morning, “What’s a good time to make it ra1n?” My reply – asap. BEFORE YOU JAILBREAK BACK UP YOUR SHSH HERE! The window to backup 4.0 firmware has already closed, but that’s no big deal because 4.0.1 is safe to do as there was no change in baseband. Again, I don’t know what all this means exactly, but if you want the option to jailbreak and unlock future firmware updates you need to do this now. I already did it on 4.0. I’ll be jailbreaking as soon as its out as other than switching web hosts this is priority number one and unlike the former actually fun!

So Steve Jobs was onstage again today. This time to announce details of iPhone 4.0. This will be the latest software update. Almost all you should have firmware of 3.0, 3.1, 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. Anytime you connect to iTunes you are prompted to update to the latest firmware if your iPhone or iTouch does not have it installed. You always want to say NO until you are aware of what the new firmware offers. First, 4.0 will be released in June. Likely just a few days before the 4th generation iPhone is put on sale. While there are numerous things coming, a few things stood out as the biggest along with a list of things still needed. Thus, jailbreaking is still the best option. First is multitasking! This is a big one that almost all smart phones already have. Think of it like minimizing a program on your computer. Now you’ll be able to minimize/background Pandora to leave the music playing while you open other apps! This will only be available to 3GS iPhones and not 3G. Steve stated that the 3G hardware could not handle it. This is a flat out lie. I’ve been using ProSwitcher to background apps for months with no problem. If you want to see how it works see the video here. The real reason Apple won’t allow multitasking in 4.0 to iPhone 3G users is they want you to buy the new 4th generation iPhone. Your two year contract is up for renewal so most will do so happily. But it is an annoying policy. It is also why many of you like me are waiting for the camera on the 2nd generation iPad before we buy one. Anyway, bottom line is multitasking is finally here. Another big announcement was Apple Game Center. This should be similar to XBox Live and is like a social network for Apple games. iPhone OS 4.0 will also introduce folders. Its about time. Want to take your 5 or 25 game icons and place them all under one folder labeled games? Well, now you can. On the downside is iAd which is Apple’s new mobile advertising platform. This is another way for developers to make money with their apps. However, what it means to me is that you will see alot more advertisements in free apps. Probably enough to make many people go ahead and shell out the two or three dollars for the advertisement free paid version of the app.

There are still many things missing that I can currently do with my jailbroken iPhone 3G. Tethering, adding custom sounds to SMS, mail or sliders and using a bluetooth keyboard with your iPhone. Oh well, I guess we can look forward to getting some of that with 5.0. In the meantime, if you still haven’t jailbroken your iPhone or iTouch watch this video for a few reasons why.

For those tired of all the iPad news, Apple has invited a select few to an event Thursday where they discuss details of what’s coming with firmware 4.0. Rumors are multi-tasking will be one thing for sure. I mentioned this along with a few other items I’m hoping for in this post a few weeks ago. While 4.0 probably won’t be released until the 4th generation iPhone comes in June at least we’ll know more about what’s being added. This likely puts an end to any new jailbreak coming for the iPhone until then. Why bother working on jailbreaking firmware that will be outdated soon. In some other iPhone news that I mentioned in my last post, it is now confirmed that Nexflix is coming to the iPhone and iTouch.

A few days ago Apple released iTunes 9.1. First off, if you have jailbroken or plan to maybe jailbreak one day you should never upgrade iTunes or your iPhone’s firmware or carrier settings unless you research it and find out it is safe first! The Dev-Team has confirmed it is safe to upgrade for all jailbreakers expect those that used blackra1n. I used PwnageTool and redsn0w so I upgraded and have had no issues. Now if you used blackra1n there is already a fix out called blackbreeze (don’t you love the names?) but its very new with mixed early reports. Bottom line, if you used blackra1n don’t upgrade until any issues with blackbreeze are resolved. Get ready, with the iPad and iPhone 4.0 coming in the next few months there should be lots of jailbreaking news.

For anyone using their jailbroken iPhone or iTouch mainly as a computer, you can type with any wireless bluetooth keyboard with BTstack. BTstack is a $5 app found in Cydia under BigBoss. This is another great app that I’m sure Apple will support at some point, but why wait? BTW, anyone notice how BigBoss has the best apps out there? Anyway, if you can type 80 words per minute, then you can type that fast on your iPhone. The Bluetooth app syncs and pairs easily with your keyboard allowing you to then type in Notes, Safari, Mail or any other app. Tap the icon with a picture and label of “keyboard” and it begins to scan for bluetooth devices. It should find your keyboard within a few seconds. Simply tap to select it and away you go. It’s really amazing how fast things are moving along in the mobile industry. Soon I suspect the keyboard will fold into a nice rectangle that fits within the back of an iPhone case. The BTstack keyboard is just one more little step in mobile computing. I made a quick video to show this app in action. How long til Apple adds a native app to do the same function???
