HBO GO Hits 3 Million Users & Gets True Blood First

We reviewed HBO Go back in May when it came out and were impressed. Recall HBO Go gives you access to their entire library of content to watch on your iPhone, iPod, iPad or Android device provided you are an HBO subscriber. It’s the only app I can think of that gives you every show on demand. Hulu and Netflix are quite limited in what I consider the more current in demand content. Today HBO went over 3 million downloads for the app which is impressive given they only have 28 million subscribers. Expect downloads to continue as they are releasing new episodes to hit shows on the app a week before they air. Not sure if this will continue, but it’s an interesting move. It certainly will increase demand and viewership on the app, but since the episode will be leaked to websites, will their television viewership go down as potentially millions of people watch on other devices before the shows air on TV? Time will tell. In the meantime, check the TV Shows page for links to episode 2 of True Blood which airs Sunday. There is a mov file which drops right into iTunes and will play on your iDevice. It’s quality is great and I recommend you download that one. I also put an mp4 link which is fine, but slightly darker just in case your device can’t get the mov file to work. Enjoy!

Getting and Converting Files Explained

I’ve been getting enough questions about downloading and converting files that I thought I’d expand my how to get movies video with a tutorial here. A video demonstration is at end of post. The first thing you have to do is download the movie, TV show, music album, software app etc. If you download from the Movies or TV show pages on iPhone4idiots.com then you are downloading a single link mp4 file. This is best for idiots because it is ready to drop into iTunes and sync with your iPod, iTouch or iPhone. However, if you download from a link posted in the Forum or another website, odds are you will not be so lucky! So first off, there are really two main sites to download movies and TV shows – Rapidshare and Megaupload. While there are others, these are the biggest two by far. They pretty much work the same way and you don’t have to pay a thing to use either of them! Megaupload works just like the video I mentioned above shows. Click the Megaupload link and the either the download starts or it ask for a password. Type in the password and you are good to go. When you click on a link that takes you to Rapidshare you will see two buttons – Free user on the left and Premium user on the right. Click on Free user and you should be taken to a screen that has a clock counting down from about 80. After the eighty seconds are up a big circular button appears for you to click on and your download starts. Sometimes Rapidshare will post the following message, “Currently a lot of users are downloading files. Please try again in 2 minutes or become a Premium member.” Just wait the two minutes and try again. Unfortunately, I’ve also seen the link take you to a page stating that you must be a Premium member to download. I never used to see this, but it is becoming more common. This stinks, but is a good reason to stick with sites like iPhone4idiots that don’t do that. Basically, the person that uploaded the file will get paid if you signup to become a Premium user through there link. Another way uploaders try and get paid is by using linkbucks. Linkbucks is highly annoying but harmless. When you click on a linkbucks link you are taken to a page that you must wait 15 seconds to be forwarded onto Megaupload/Rapidshare. There is a link in the upper right you can click on to not have to wait the 15 seconds. However, either way you will surely get at least one pop-up trying to sell you something. Kevin’s money tree is a very common one recently. These pop-ups do not infect your computer with any viruses or spyware. They are safe to use, just annoying. You will find some of these on the older links on our TV shows and Movies pages. However, they are fewer and fewer as all new links are strictly Megaupload. Anyway, so once you download the file you need to check the extension. Again, if you got it from the Movies or TV shows page you are ready to drop your mp4 file into iTunes. If you got it elsewhere odds are it is either avi or rar. We’ll start with rar which like a zip file is just a way to compress the file. Think of it as a box or folder with a file inside it. You need to unrar the box to see what the file is inside. Luckily this is easy to do. Generally, just right click on the file you want to unrar and click extract. If that doesn’t work install WinRAR here. Many times a movie will be broken into multiple smaller files. I don’t like this but its no big deal. Just create a folder on your desktop with the movie name. Download each rar file into that folder. Each file will end with extension part1.rar, part2.rar OR 1.rar, 2.rar and so forth. Once you have all the multiple parts in the folder just right click on the first section/part and choose extract. It will creat a single video file for you. On a mac you can just double click it and it will work. So once its un-rared you will have another file. If you are lucky its mp4, but its likely avi. Not to worry. AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a standard audio / video file format under Windows. The problem is that will not play your iDevice. Luckily, there are tons of free software that will convert the avi to mp4. Just type free video converter into google and pick one. I’ve used Any Video Converter, Free Video Converter, Handbrake and iSquint. Some software has more options than others, but basically the steps are as follows. One, select Add File, Open or drag and drop the avi file into the software. Two, select the output profile. This may be as simple as picking MPEG-4 from a drop down menu or may involve selecting file size and bit rate. The good thing is no matter what you do it will likely work. You may just need to experiment some to find an output that looks good enough for you. Three, make sure you see where the output file is going to be placed. Four, hit Convert/Encode button and it will create an mp4 file in about 5 minutes on average! You are almost done. Now just drag and drop the mp4 file into iTunes and follow the instructions in the how to get movie video. Please feel free to ask questions in Forum if you are having any issues. It’s really pretty simple. Just read the article and watch the video again if you are having problems. Also, for more advanced users, please feel free to post in Forum about converting mkv files.

Dexter – App Review & New Episode!!!

Dexter The Game, Marc Ecko Entertainment $5.99, is out just in time for the start of the fourth season of Showtime’s hit show Dexter. Season 4 starts Sunday night September 27th, but you can download the first episode here right now for free! The game follows the storyline of the first season (the ice truck killer) with the object being similar to that of the show. Serve justice by only killing the guilty (thereby satisfying your need to kill - aka your dark passenger), don’t let anyone know your identity and above all don’t get caught. The Game features over 1100 lines of dialog and the storyline was written by series producer Tim Schlattmann.As a big fan of the show I felt the 3D environments looked great and I’ve included a number of screen shots below. The game play is pretty intuitive. In the photo above, the button on the bottom left moves Dexter forward while the one the right moves him back. You swipe your finger to move him left or right. Up at the top you’ll notice GPS and Journal buttons which you will use often. The GPS moves Dexter from one location to another while the Journal tells you what task you should be trying to complete. Objects you can interact with glow when you approach them and a new button pops up on the right when you are in front of them. The first task involves killing Mike Donovan and the game begins with Dexter digging up the graves of where Mike Donovan buried his victims. Once you have the proof that he is guilty you stalk and then kill him. Sneaking up behind him took me about a dozen tries, but I’m not the best at 3D gaming. After getting behind him the game reloads and takes you to the kill room where Mr. Donovan is already wrapped under the plastic as seen here on the right. See the three dead bodies on the floor? These were the people Donovan killed that you just dug up as evidence. You get to pick a weapon of choice and talk for a moment to try and get a confession out of him. The actual killing isn’t gory at all as you just swipe your finger across the screen in the patterns displayed. The bulk of Dexter’s gameplay involves stalking suspected criminals and investigating crime scenes. Once you confirm that yes, the criminal in question does indeed deserve killing, you kill them. There are multiple storylines running at the same time as you go from location to location. The journal, seen here on the left, tells you what you do next and provides little hints as well. When you tap one of the missions it tells you something like talk to Deb, find evidence on Jaworski at his home or go check out blood reports at the station. There are many locations from Dexter’s apartment: Rita’s house, the police stations, various crime scenes and places where you gather evidence and stalk your victims. Again, I’m not a big gamer, but I’ve found most tasks fairly easy to complete at this point. So far, nothing has taken longer than an hour. One scene has you use a trashcan to jump a fence, pick a lock to get a crowbar and then use the crowbar to open the trunk of a car to gather proof of your upcoming victim’s guilt. Another scene has you sneak up to check out a car while the owner talks on the front porch. Seen here on the right, I think this one took me about a dozen tries. Some scenes are timed and you must complete the task before the clock strikes zero or start again. The dialogue in the game is nice as you have brief conversations with a multitude of characters. After each line, you have three options to respond to carry on the conversation. It’s a little hard to know what exactly the responses will say, but I really don’t think it’s a big deal. As you can see here on the left, each of my three potential responses to Deb is only a few words so its a little hard to know exactly what Dexter will say. What’s nice is hearing Doakes or Deb say something that makes you laugh. They are by far the two best characters on the show. As I mentioned earlier, the storyline follows that of the first season. There is even the scene where Dexter follows the ice truck and is blinded by high beams while the ice truck killer throws a decapitated head off his car. This is a very indepth game and I’m sure I’ve left out numerous details and tips. Luckily the help menu is quite extensive. I’ve included some additional screen shots at the end of the article.

On the downside, there are two problems with the game. First, the load time is quite long. Not just when you start up, but even when you move between locations. This isn’t too surprising as the game has so many scenes. Given the size and quality of the game this really doesn’t bother me. The bigger problem is the that the game has dropped me on many occasions. More so than any other app I’ve ever used. I don’t know if it’s because something went wrong with the install or because the game is just too intense in size and scene changes. Luckily, there is an auto save so when the game does drop and force you to restart the app, you don’t lose where you were. I’d say it drops once every 45 minutes.

Despite this issue, if you are a fan Dexter then you probably will like Dexter The Game. Also, by playing the game you have a chance to win a walk on role to Season 5. I haven’t read the rules since you’d have to purchase it through iTunes, but I’m sure its not too difficult.

Lastly, Season 4 starts this Sunday Night – Sept. 27th. But guess what? The first episode is already up on the Dexter TV show page. Lundy is back and Angel has a new woman! Tell me what you think in the Forum.

OK, from the last poll I learned that Family Guy was way more popular than I realized. Final results for favorite TV shows on iPhone4idiots.com – True Blood (46 votes), Family Guy (37 votes), Dexter (28 votes), Weeds (22 votes) and South Park (16 votes). So now that I have a little better understanding of what you are watching I’m curious to know where you are watching your downloads? For me, I watch over 90% on TV with the rest on my iPhone. I’m sure many of you watch exclusively on your mp4 player. I doubt many watch on there computer, but I’ve been surprised before. Also, if you watch somewhere that I didn’t list, please comment and I’ll add it to the poll.

Hope everyone is well. Added Face Off for calebcj85, Fast Times at Ridgemont High for 115sm2330, The Boondock Saints, The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard and ET. On TV shows we started adding Reaper and Mad Men. Finales of True Blood and Hung should be up very soon along with Entourage. I also posted a number of links in the Forum so check there to see if your request has been met. Also, consider adding to your profile please. Most of the Forum links are through linkbucks which is slightly annoying but many uploaders use it to make a little extra cash. Hope you all appreciate that we only link directly to megaupload (no spam) and only to mp4 files.

mp4 Requests – Labor Day Edition

Hey, I just got back from three days at Lake Lanier so haven’t gotten as many requests as would have liked. Kids had a blast so it was well worth it. Anyway, for movies added Spirited Away for Chris and Fair Game for vterra09. I also added better quality mp4 files for Halloween 2 and Ice Age 3. As far as TV shows, I’ve been adding Chuck for Nori and Flipping Out for capricious86 (hope you burn a few extra calories). I also got Sons of Anarchy up to date for Kodi. There was no new HBO last night and most the season finales are this week (anyone looking forward to True Blood?).
