Awesome App to Help Your Toddler Learn to Spell – So I thought :(

So my 5 year old starts Kindergarten in August and I have this weird feeling like I need him to be prepared. So I’m trying to get him to play more educational games, practice writing, tying his shoes and he has to learn to swim this summer. I’d been looking for a good spelling app for awhile and I finally found Word Magic, $0.99, which was exactly what I was looking for. It has a good database of simple beginner words and cute sounds to make the game as fun as a spelling game is gonna get. Each word is displayed with one letter missing giving the kiddos 4 choices to fill in the blank. You can set it to have the first, last or one of the middle letters missing which is great! I thought, “nice, the boy can play this all day if he wants.” Well, it lasted about 15 words before he wanted to play something else.

The something else of the moment is Plants versus Zombies, $2.99, which I made the mistake of showing my 5 year old. The game is kind of fun, but is very easy. The beginning levels are so simple that my 5 year old can play by himself and get to level 7. He loves this as you parents know the kiddos like to be able to do it themselves :) Anyway, the moral of the story is whether an educational versus mind numbing game, book versus television or banana versus a cookie, my toddler like yours is probably gonna pick the one I would. Dam, there may be no hope for the boy.

Best Apps for Toddlers

YouTube – Yes, its TV, but when you are desperate why not Scooby Doo?

Photos – Yes, they love scrolling through your photos

ABC Memory Match - There are lots of memory games out there. At least this one is slightly educational. JirboMatch is another good one.

Tic Tac Touch - Simple version of classic game

PocketPhonics – Again, I am sucker for ones that seem more educational. This one teaches to spell simple words.

Math Races – My kids aren’t old enough to use this one, but it looks great.

Animal Farm – Shows pictures of three animals and makes a sound. You just have to touch which animal makes that sound. Great for 2-4 year olds.

Scribble Lite – Lets them draw on your photos. Put a mustashe on mommy type of fun!

Preschool Adventure – Teaches shapes, colours, body parts, and animals.

FirstWords – Teaches spelling dropping letters into boxes. The kiddos love using their fingers to make stuff happen.
