iPod Touch > Nook Tablet > Amazon Fire

Sorry for the geeky math equation title, but it’s true. Barnes and Nobel announced the most recent addition of the Nook product line today. The Nook Tablet is the direct competitor to the recently announced Amazon Kindle Fire. The Nook Tablet looks the same as the Nook Color and has the same 7 inch color display with the same resolution. However, the $249 “Tablet” offers better hardware with a 1Ghz processor and 1 GB of RAM. The Nook Tablet also offers 16GB of storage with an SD card slot for additional space. While it will be a little over a week before you can get your hands on either, do yourself a favor and pass on both for an iPod Touch instead. Continue Reading…

Amazon Fire Will Compete with Nook Not iPad

Amazon announced a new “tablet” today called the Amazon Fire. It has a 7” color display and runs a version of Android. As expected, this low end tablet will have no impact on iPad sales while certainly cannibalizing existing Kindle sales and hurting Nook sales too. It’s really not a tablet, but a high end e-reader. How can people call it a tablet with no camera, no microphone and almost no apps? This isn’t necessarily a bad thing for Amazon as they just want to sell books, magazines and movies. The price is only $199 and at the same time they are dropping the price of the Kindle to $79. At these prices I fully suspect Amazon loses or makes almost no money on each sale. Actually to me the biggest news today might be the e-ink Kindle is now only $79. Christmas gifts anyone?? At that price I might even get one just to see if it helps me read more. Continue Reading…

Amazon Tablet – Might Be a Killer, But Not For iPad

The biggest news this week should come Wednesday as Amazon will announce their long awaited entry into the tablet market. I’m very interested to see what Amazon offers. Rumors have a 7 inch tablet that runs Android with a emphasis on media, but no apps. This would keep the price around $250. If this is the case I see it taking market share from the Kindle, not the iPad. Yes, the price point is nice, but you have to have apps to be a true tablet. Also, I’ve mentioned before how 7 inch displays are a huge mistake. People are using tablets to view media and a bigger screen is better. A 10 inch still fits nicely into almost any bag or purse. We’ll see Wednesday, but I’m already laughing at the articles coming soon titled, “Amazon’s iPad Killer.” Won’t happen. But for those of you with a Kindle or Nook, this might be something you’ll want?
