Don’t Believe iPad 3 Price Increase Rumor

So most the Apple and iPhone blogs reported the rumor yesterday that the iPad 3 will cost $80 more than the iPad 2. Macrumors started this crap by reporting a Chinese blog that listed the price for a 16GB wifi only iPad 3 at $579, $80 more than the iPad 2. I don’t believe it. When has Apple ever raised the price of an iPhone or iPad? That doesn’t guarantee that they won’t do it, but until proven otherwise I’ll stick with history as a guide as opposed to some Chinese blog. We’ll know for sure very soon as the iPad 3 will be on sale in less than a month.

Apple’s China Syndrome?

ABC Nightline aired a report Tuesday night taking a look at “iFactory: Inside Apple”. Apple granted them access to the Foxconn plant in China that employs approximately 500,000. There has been some press recently about poor working conditions. The report focused on long hours, depression, suicide netting around all buildings and fact the workers can’t even afford one iPad. While this is just temporary bad press that’s been covered before the recent Chinese court rulings are more worrisome for Apple. Continue Reading…

No iPad Mini in 2012

I don’t care what The Wall Street Journal writes. What the hell do they know anyway? I’m sticking by what I said in December. There will be no iPad mini in 2012. How will Apple maintain margins selling an iPad at that price point? More importantly, I’ll quote Steve Jobs from a October 2010, Q4 earnings call,

“the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA.”

He was right. The reason. 7 inch tablets are too small. Images have to be a certain size to make them work on a touchable screen. With a 7 inch display it just doesn’t work as cleanly as an iPad. Sure, Apple can change its’ mind on this and one day might, but I’m sure Amazon’s Kindle doesn’t worry them at all. I’d be very surprised if they introduced an iPad mini this year.

Should You Buy an iPad 3 in March?

So Apple is going to announce the iPad 3 on March 7th and it should be released shortly after that (like I’m guessing March 16). So it’s pretty clear from the rumor mill what will be new in the iPad 3. The real question is whether to buy one or upgrade from a current model. Continue Reading…

iPhone 4S & iPad 2 iOS 5.0 Jailbreak Arrives!

Great news the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 has been released. This is the first jailbreak of any kind for iPhone 4S so servers are sure to slammed for the next 48 hours. The jailbreak is easy as I’ve already updated my iPad 2 to 5.0.1, re-jailbroke it and so far am experiencing no bugs (as expected). So watch the video cause this jailbreak called Absinthe works differently than redsn0w or greenpois0n. After watching click continue reading for a few extra tips. Continue Reading…

iBooks 2 to Include Textbooks

Apple today announced iBooks 2 for the iPad, which will include Textbooks. Textbooks will focus on high-quality interactive content for students. Interesting Apple also announced iBooks Author for the Mac that will allow teachers and publishers to create ebooks. Let the publishers create the ebooks and Apple will just take their cut. So before Apple held it’s education conference today I was hoping for one thing. Get rid of textbooks in schools. I hear college textbooks are about $200 each. That’s almost $1000 per semester on books! Apple could give iPads to incoming Freshman for free and make money by the end of the first year by getting rid of this racket. A textbook download would surely be half the price. Not to mention when there is an update the old textbooks don’t become useless. It’s just an update, not a new tree killing press run. Taking notes or highlighting on your iPad pages is now simple to do. Not to mention carrying around one iPad as opposed to three or four textbooks. It just makes too much sense. The author still makes money, the publisher’s still get paid, the student pays less and Apple makes a killing as well. It’s good for Apple, it’s good for students, it’s good for whatever universities are smart enough to be early adopters. The only losers are textbook makers and those companies that deal with buying and selling of old textbooks. Frankly, they deserve to die. The other losers are Apple’s competition. Despite it’s massive purchasing power, how much longer can Amazon buy books wholesale and compete in a digital world? Also, poor Microsoft. There will be no windows version of iBooks and I’m sure their market share in the university and college world will disappear over the next decade. Somewhere up there I think Steve Jobs is smiling.

No Point to iPad Rear Facing Camera

iLounge’s, Jeremy Horwitz, claimed yesterday that the iPad 3 will have an 8 megapixel rear facing camera. This is hardly shocking news as every new iPhone or iPad has a slightly better camera than the previous model. Well, I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. What’s the point? Does anyone use the rear facing camera on an iPad? Yeah, I’m sure there is a very small percentage that do, but it’s a complete waste. I’d gladly buy an iPad 3 with no rear facing camera if it was $50 cheaper. When it comes to taking pictures most people have a smart phone or digital camera that is better. Even with an 8 megapixel camera who is gonna pull out their iPad to take a picture? I just don’t get it. Since Apple started this stupid idea of a rear camera on a tablet every other tablet maker is following suit. I’m sure Apple won’t remove it at this point since that small percentage of users who somehow use it would be outraged. I’m trying to think of a good analogy like maybe a 4th USB port on a computer? Anyway, if anyone actually uses the rear camera on their iPad please tell me when.

iPhone 4S & iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak Next Week!

Jailbreak
Anyone following @Pod2G on Twitter has seen some great tweets to ring in the new year. Eariler today he tweeted, “I made a step today for the A5. With some luck we could expect a release in a week.” A5 refers to the chip used in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S that has been the reason there has been no jailbreak of any kind on iOS 5. Apparantly, not only is one coming soon, but it will be untethered just like his recent exploit that was used for the latest release of redsn0w. He later tweeted that it was safe to update your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 to iOS 5.0.1. Yes, this long awaited untethered jailbreak must be very close. While it could take a bit longer we all hope the “luck” is there and a new jailbreak is released next week. Maybe Sunday will be funday! I know there is a huge number of iPhone 4S users that have been waiting for this day to arrive. My recomendation, go ahead and update to 5.0.1 right now. Once the jailbreak is released servers (including Apple’s) will be slammed with activity. Expect iOS 5.1 to be coming fairly soon as well. I doubt there will be anything signifcant so I don’t recommend updating as you’ll lose your jailbreak. Supposedly the 5.1 jailbreak will come quickly, but again I would stay on 5.0.1. As soon as it’s out I’ll let you know. Who’s excited?

iOS 5.0 & 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak Arrives!

Let’s start with the bad news. There is no iOS 5.0 or higher jailbreak for the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S. Despite all the rumors other sites post, IMO there likely won’t be one until after iOS 5.1 is released which means it is still months away. Now the good news! Today @pod2G released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 that works on iPhone 4 (both GSM & CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation and iPad 1. It uses redsn0w and is very simple. Watch the quick video as I spent that past hour re-jailbreaking my iPhone 4 and my kids iPod Touch 4th generations. If you were already using a tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak keep reading as I recommend doing a full restore to iOS 5.0.1 as opposed to using the Cydia patch. Continue Reading…

Merkury 360 Rotating Stand for iPad 2

So I thought I’d try this stand since the Belkin Chef Stand & Stylus wasn’t too good. Well, I’m 0 for 2. While this stand does rotate it doesn’t do it in the right way since it doesn’t have a rotating ball axis. That is the key feature to the correct stand. I have yet another new stand on the way. In the meantime, here is the review
