iPhone 4S & iPad 2 iOS 5.0 Jailbreak Arrives!

Great news the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 has been released. This is the first jailbreak of any kind for iPhone 4S so servers are sure to slammed for the next 48 hours. The jailbreak is easy as I’ve already updated my iPad 2 to 5.0.1, re-jailbroke it and so far am experiencing no bugs (as expected). So watch the video cause this jailbreak called Absinthe works differently than redsn0w or greenpois0n. After watching click continue reading for a few extra tips. Continue Reading…

iPhone 4S & iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak Next Week!

Jailbreak
Anyone following @Pod2G on Twitter has seen some great tweets to ring in the new year. Eariler today he tweeted, “I made a step today for the A5. With some luck we could expect a release in a week.” A5 refers to the chip used in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S that has been the reason there has been no jailbreak of any kind on iOS 5. Apparantly, not only is one coming soon, but it will be untethered just like his recent exploit that was used for the latest release of redsn0w. He later tweeted that it was safe to update your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 to iOS 5.0.1. Yes, this long awaited untethered jailbreak must be very close. While it could take a bit longer we all hope the “luck” is there and a new jailbreak is released next week. Maybe Sunday will be funday! I know there is a huge number of iPhone 4S users that have been waiting for this day to arrive. My recomendation, go ahead and update to 5.0.1 right now. Once the jailbreak is released servers (including Apple’s) will be slammed with activity. Expect iOS 5.1 to be coming fairly soon as well. I doubt there will be anything signifcant so I don’t recommend updating as you’ll lose your jailbreak. Supposedly the 5.1 jailbreak will come quickly, but again I would stay on 5.0.1. As soon as it’s out I’ll let you know. Who’s excited?

iOS 5.0 & 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak Arrives!

Let’s start with the bad news. There is no iOS 5.0 or higher jailbreak for the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S. Despite all the rumors other sites post, IMO there likely won’t be one until after iOS 5.1 is released which means it is still months away. Now the good news! Today @pod2G released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 that works on iPhone 4 (both GSM & CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation and iPad 1. It uses redsn0w and is very simple. Watch the quick video as I spent that past hour re-jailbreaking my iPhone 4 and my kids iPod Touch 4th generations. If you were already using a tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak keep reading as I recommend doing a full restore to iOS 5.0.1 as opposed to using the Cydia patch. Continue Reading…

Current Jailbreak Status

Lots of jailbreaking news recently as @Pod2G has an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak that he may be about to release to the public that works on iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1. Currently the redsn0w semi tethered jailbreak is your only option for iOS 5. Both jailbreaks will work on any iOS device with an A4 chip – iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generations. This new untethered jailbreak WILL NOT WORK ON THE iPhone 4S or iPad 2. They have an A5 chip that @Pod2G is testing, but I’d be very surprised if it worked on those two devices anytime soon. This is a bummer as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are the only devices for which there is no jailbreak on iOS 5. One is coming but it could be months. On the bright side iPhone 4 and iPod Touch users might finally have an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5. As of today there is still only the redsn0w semi-tethered jailbreak option. I find that it works great for me, but I bet a lot of people are waiting for an untethered one. Confused? There is a color coded chart for the current status here on our jailbreak page. Just know you can’t jailbreak an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S on iOS 5. Hopefully, @Pod2G will release this new untethered jailbreak for most devices before the new year. It’s possible he waits to try and getting it working on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, but that could take months. It’s his call.

Top Ten Winterboard Themes for 2011

Made a quick fun video showing off ten cool themes that I used on my iPhone or iPad at some point during 2011. The video shows the name and source for each theme which you can find in Cydia. My favorite one for the moment, Atomic Glow, is free.

Untethered iOS 5.0 and 5.01 Jailbreak

5.0 Jailbreak
Chronic Dev Team (the one’s behind Greenpois0n) member @pod2g shows a working untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 in this video! It is on an iPod Touch, but will surely work on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS as well. He tweeted it works on 5.0.1 too. However, he has not tested and it likely will not work on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. He doesn’t own either device so he hasn’t tired, but I doubt it will work on the A5 device. Nevertheless, this is good news for iPhone 4 and iPod Touch owners that have been wanting an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. It shouldn’t be long now. Maybe before the end of the year. For those iPad 2 and iPhone 4S users the wait likely will continue into 2012. Before you ask about what can or can’t be jailbroken see this chart.

Greenpois0n Not Coming Soon

Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill (aka @p0sixninja) updated the Greenpois0n.com website this evening for the first time in months. For those hoping for an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S it is a sad read. The bottom line. They still have much work to do and I’d be surprised if we see a new Greeenpois0n jailbreak this year. Continue Reading…

Greenpois0n iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak Ready?

See this tweet yesterday from Justin Williams. @JayWalker9988 is a member of the Chronic Dev Team which created the popular jailbreak tool Greenpois0n. The tweet implies that Greenpois0n has been “updated” for a iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak and a public release might be very soon. Could we see it before Thanksgiving? As always, no one other than a limited number of developers knows for sure. However, I’ve been asked at least half a dozen times this past week about when the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak is going to be released. So this is latest on Greenpois0n. Of course, an untethered iOS 5 version of redsn0w might come anytime now as well. I for one can’t wait.

Should You Jailbreak iOS 5?

Should you jailbreak iOS 5? Yes, of course you should. I’m quite happy with my iPhone 4 on the semi tethered redsn0w jailbreak. So there are five Cydia apps I use all the time on iOS 5 that make jailbreaking a must. SBSettings, iFile, Activator, BiteSMS and PdaNet/MyWi are still must have features. I show each one in this video. Check it out and let me know where you are on jailbreaking your iOS device?

iOS 5 redsn0w jailbreak semi tethered

Well that didn’t take long. Less than 7 hours from posting that my advice was to wait for the untethered jailbreak, I decided what the heck. So I went from 4.3.1 to 5.0 on my iPhone 4. Re-jailbroke with redsn0w 0.9.9b7 and installed semi-tether from the BigBoss source. Redsn0w and Big Boss have been around forever and it worked fine. The hardest part was the hour it took my iMac to install iOS 5 and restore from backup. I had over 100 apps :) – Anyway, worst case is it reboots one day and I can’t use Cydia or Safari for a few hours. No biggie. Please watch the video and give me thumbs up for taking the plunge!
UPDATE 9/24 8:00AM – I should mention iBooks just crashes with this redsn0w jailbreak. No big deal for me as I don’t read iBooks and if I did I’d get an $80 Kindle for that. My guess is there will be a fix within a week or two.
