Should You Jailbreak iOS 5?

Should you jailbreak iOS 5? Yes, of course you should. I’m quite happy with my iPhone 4 on the semi tethered redsn0w jailbreak. So there are five Cydia apps I use all the time on iOS 5 that make jailbreaking a must. SBSettings, iFile, Activator, BiteSMS and PdaNet/MyWi are still must have features. I show each one in this video. Check it out and let me know where you are on jailbreaking your iOS device?

iOS 5 redsn0w jailbreak semi tethered

Well that didn’t take long. Less than 7 hours from posting that my advice was to wait for the untethered jailbreak, I decided what the heck. So I went from 4.3.1 to 5.0 on my iPhone 4. Re-jailbroke with redsn0w 0.9.9b7 and installed semi-tether from the BigBoss source. Redsn0w and Big Boss have been around forever and it worked fine. The hardest part was the hour it took my iMac to install iOS 5 and restore from backup. I had over 100 apps :) – Anyway, worst case is it reboots one day and I can’t use Cydia or Safari for a few hours. No biggie. Please watch the video and give me thumbs up for taking the plunge!
UPDATE 9/24 8:00AM – I should mention iBooks just crashes with this redsn0w jailbreak. No big deal for me as I don’t read iBooks and if I did I’d get an $80 Kindle for that. My guess is there will be a fix within a week or two.

Semi – Tethered Jailbreak

Jailbreaking
So you may have read about BigBoss releasing a semi-tethered jailbreak. If you don’t know the difference keep reading, but before I get asked again – The iPad 2 and iPhone 4S use the same A5 processing chip (at least that’s what I think it is) for which there is no jailbreak for iOS 5. People are working on that. Most other devices can be jailbroken on iOS 5. Specifically, the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G. However, it is a tethered jailbreak which I don’t recommend. This semi-tethered is better, but not ideal either. My advice, unless you really need it on your iDevice, just play around with iOS 5 and iCloud for awhile. The untethered jailbreak will be here soon enough. So if you want to know the difference between these jailbreaks Continue Reading…

Status of iOS 5 Jailbreak

Jailbreaking
So iOS 5 will be available for download in less than 24 hours. Most people would like to try it out including me. However, there is no way I’m going to give up my untethered jailbreak. Within a week there will be millions of new iPhone 4S that all are running iOS 5 for which there will be no jailbreak. Given how long it took to get an untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2, I thought it might take just as long or longer for iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S. However, this was me being an idiot. See most the exploits that have been found to create an untethered jailbreak have been held back waiting for iOS 5. I now think there is a good chance the iOS 5 jailbreak will come rather quickly. Better yet, it should be untethered! I0n1c tweeted, “As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who :P .” Over the summer many well known jailbreakers gathered together for a conference called JailbreakCon. P0sixninja announced that five iOS 5 vulnerabilities had been found for the iPad 2. Assuming this is true an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 for the iPad 2 should come very quickly. Beta verisions of iOS 5 have been out for months so hopefully much of the work required to release the jailbreak has already been done. It is very likely the holes for the iPad 2 will also work on existing devices like the iPhone 4, iPad and more recent iPods. Whether it will work on the iPhone 4S is more questionable as it is new hardware. Hopefully so, but time will tell. The good news is an untethered jailbreak for most if not all devices running iOS 5 might not be far away. As always, if anything is released I’ll be jailbreaking away immediately and giving updates on Facebook, Twitter and here.

Cydia App – Record your iPad 2 Screen

Mordi asked about recording the iPad 2 display. Yes, it can be done and it’s not very hard on your jailbroken iPad 2. You just need Display Recorder ($4.99) from Cydia. I’ve read Apple won’t allow screen recording for some odd reason so the only way you can do this is to jailbreak. Again, it’s so easy to do right now I would just install Cydia from jailbreakme.com even if you don’t use it yet. BTW, over 2,000,000 downloads! Now why might you want to do this? Well for me recording the display gives my YouTube Video a much crisper look than shooting through my best video recorder (my iPhone 4). For now it only records the video – no sound. Ok so watch the video and if you want the steps to do this

What Cydia Apps to Add to Jailbroken iPad 2!

I am one happy camper playing with my iPad 2 now that it’s jailbroken thanks to Comex! BTW, over 1,000,000 downloads from jailbreakme.com in 24 hours. Not surprised and I’m sure the vast majority were iPad 2. If you haven’t jailbroken already you really should. Just watch the video here it’s so easy, reversible and legal. So what have I installed and am playing with? Watch the video and then continue reading to see instructions. As always please comment. It makes me feel loved. I’ve also added a new poll. Which of these apps/tweaks would you most want – RetinaPad, Multi-Touch gestures, FolderEnhancer, FullForce?

iPad 2 Jailbreak Arrives!!

Yahoooooo! After such a long wait, a jailbreak for the iPad 2 was released tonight by comex. The iPad 2 was the only iOS device for which there was no jailbreak so now all is right in the world again. It’s also the third version of the easiest jailbreak ever – jailbreakme.com. This is a Userland exploit, not Bootrom. This means it is not hardware based so Apple can fix it with a firmware update. It should go without saying, but never update your iOS device’s firmware unless you are sure you can re-jailbreak it after the update. The iPad 2 jailbreak works only on iOS 4.3.3 for the moment. If you followed the drama of the leak this weekend, comex wanted to get the jailbreak released and thus is only doing 4.3.3 for now. Before you jailbreak be sure you are on iOS 4.3.3, sync your iPad 2 with iTunes and backup photos etc. and lastly backup your SHSH blob for 4.3.3 with Tiny Umbrella (see video). Like previous versions all you have to do is goto jailbreakme.com on your iPad 2 and tap the free button followed by a tap of the green install button. In one minute you’ll have Cydia and the fun can begin. See this video for example.

iPad 2 Jailbreak Drama

Following developments in the jailbreak community is sometimes better than a soap opera. This weekend is proving to be one of those. Ryan Lobbins claims he stumbled into finding comex’s jailbreak files by luck. Curiosity took over and he started telling people in Forums about the upcoming jailbreak. He next shared the files with a few people on the Forum where one quickly made a YouTube video and contacted news websites about the jailbreak. Don’t try and mess with these files. It only works for firmware 4.0 which very few people still have on their iPad 2. This set off fireworks on Twitter with the majority of people condemning the leaker. To find out what to with your iPad 2 jailbreak and read the best of this drama Continue Reading…

Why the iPad 2 Jailbreak Discredits Theory of Capitalism

iPad 2 Jailbreak
Comex has once again updated his jailbreakme.com website with the picture seen here teasing yet again that the iPad 2 jailbreak might finally be here by July 4th. Again, this is just my guess as no one knows for sure. The iPad 2 went on sale in March and being the only iOS device without a jailbreak it is hard to underestimate the demand for it. Back in the beginning of May hopes were up that GeoHot would rain down a jailbreak as it looked like he accepted a challenge from p0sixninja. Sadly, he later decided not to do it and has since been spending his time working for Facebook. P0sixninja was working on a jailbreak, but has been quite lately. Back on May 23, the Chronic Dev team said it would be ready in weeks. A month later and all is quite. If you goto jailbreakme.com right now you’ll see notes implying that comex has been working on a jailbreak for ten months – much longer than the iPad 2 has even been out. On top is the text, “It’s been far too long.” You said it brother. Whether it’s comex or p0sixninja, if there isn’t an iPad 2 jailbreak by July 4th it will be a sad one for me as my belief in power of capitalism will be put in doubt. Continue Reading…

WWDC – iOS 5 Takes the Best of Jailbreaking Again

Great news for you non-jailbreakers out there. iOS 5, coming this Fall, is a major update where Apple has once again taken some of the best Cydia apps and implemented them into iOS. I guess the best place to start is with the Lock Screen. iOS 5 will provide a Lock Screen that provides more information and allows you to access apps directly by swiping them. No need to swipe to unlock to get to your home screen and then find and tap the app. This is very similar to Cydia app LockInfo. I don’t think it’s going to be as customizeable as LockInfo (why would Apple want you to design the look yourself) but it’s a big improvement. Along those lines you will now be able to access the camera much faster. No need to enter a passcode or slide to unlock. Just touch the camera button on the Lock Screen and it launches. Also, you can now use the up volume button to snap photos. I bet a ton or you have missed a good picture by a few seconds trying to get it launched. This will make all the difference. While this is nice, IMO the biggest and best upgrade in iOS 5 is Notifications. Continue Reading…
